I was on the verge of tears after ending the call. I had never thought that Zhuang Yu would care so much about me. To be honest, her words of encouragement did calm me down while also giving me the courage to face what lay before me. Not only do I have her, but I also had Wu Yu to rely on.

However, I still felt dreadful and sad about the situation. So that afternoon, I let myself go; I just wanted to bury my head in Wu Yu’s chest. Even though this had gone against my principle of flirt-but-not-make-a-move, I just could not help it at that moment, as that was all I wanted. He probably had no idea that, for a woman, being in the arms of the man she loves would give her the encouragement to face this dreadful world.

I nervously and stubbornly pressed my head on his chest, but I could not muster up the courage to put my arms around him, as he had pushed me away several times. As I thought about the fact that I had never ever given him a hug in the past, a pair of hands suddenly pressed gently and carefully on my waist. Yes, he was hugging me.

……

Ah Yu, I think I’ll fall for you hard.

……

I woke up very early the next morning which is also the day the fire would happen. Feeling rather nervous and having a lot on my mind, I decided to go out for a stroll. No one was awake, not even Wu Yu.

The mountain was cold like a freezer in the morning, so I put on the jackets that I purchased in the village. Even though there was barely anyone in this area, there were no wild animals either, so it was fairly safe.

Golden fingers of sunlight lit up the mountain range in the background.

My mind was all over the place, and before I knew it, I had ended up deep in the forest behind the house. Fear immediately filled me as I found myself surrounded by naked birch trees like macabre skeletons standing there in silence. Thinking that Wu Yu had probably woken up, the idea of going back quickly came to mind. Yet, when I was about to turn and go, something that was under a tree caught my eye.

Walking cautiously, I got closer and closer.

My heart dropped, and my feet became cold when I saw the thing clearly; it was a dead cat.

The cat looked malnourished and dirty; it was probably a stray. However, when I took a closer look, I noticed the fur on its head had been shaved, its paws had been mangled, and there were multiple injuries on its body. Obviously, someone had tortured them.

Disgusted by this, I turned and was about to leave when suddenly, from the corner of my eye, I saw something laying before another tree not far from here.

I hesitated for a moment before walking over.

……

In the end, I found four.

Four bodies of cats and dogs had been left in this forest. Some were buried, while some were just left under some foliage. When I could not find any more dead animals in the vicinity, I turned and ran as fast as I could. As my heart raced and the cold air rushed into my lungs, numerous thoughts came to mind.

If it were only one or two, then it was probably some punk doing a prank. But the fact that there were four and some of them even had their guts pulled out...

As far as I knew, the act of torturing animals or something indecent like collecting women’s panties were the initial manifestations of a degenerate. For example, they would torture animals in the beginning to satisfy their urge, until one day when that was not enough.

The fact that the four dead animals looked to have died at around the same time meant that this person was going through something recently and was on the verge of an outburst.

I felt a sense of relief when I finally came to the edge of the forest. Behind me were the eerie forest and the overbearing mountains, while in front of me was the Chengs’ house.
