Chapter 673: When the Rain Continues
I actually did not tell Wu Yu everything that Zhuang Yu talked to me about on the phone.
In the beginning, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that she wanted to come back. “Zhuang Yu, why are you coming back all of a sudden?” I asked in a sweet manner.
However, Zhuang Yu’s voice sounded grave as she explained, “Da Zhu, I thought about the past year we’ve spent together…”
I was shocked when I heard her talk about this. I had no memory of that period of time, but I recall asking her about it when I first noticed it, and she had said there was nothing unusual.
“It feels like there was nothing special. But when I really thought about it, I noticed that I couldn’t remember anything about our time together for the past half-year.”
A sudden dread took over as I raised my face to look at the white snowy forest ahead of me.
Zhuang Yu explained slowly and clearly, “In other words, I don’t recall anything remarkable happening to you during that time period, but my memory of you during that time period is also fuzzy. How do I put this? Subconsciously, I would think that we had spent time together like going out. However, nothing comes up when I think back about that period. I can’t recall where we went for food, what you wore, or what we talked about; I can’t recall any of the details. But you know how good my memory is. I mean, I can still remember what the invigilator wore during my last year’s exams.”
What was going on? I thought I was the only one that had lost my memory.
Suddenly, I remembered the reaction my parents had when I called them.
Similar to Zhuang Yu’s reaction, they said nothing special had happened; I was like my usual self.
The thought of them having blurry memories of me came to mind.
Could it be that everyone around me was like this?
But Wu Yu and I were not the same. He clearly remembers the things that happened for the past half-year. Not only that, but the people around him, Professor Cheng, Xiao Hua, and Cheng Ruying, all remember him.
“You know what, it’s as if you’re like some sort of shadow existing in my memory.” Zhuang Yu’s voice came through the phone once more.
Then a scary and unusual thought forced its way into my mind.
Perhaps it was not that I have lost my memory, but that I did not exist or experience that half-year.
I pondered why I was different from Wu Yu.
Unfortunately, such things were beyond my knowledge and understanding. Fearing the unknown, I turned my back toward Wu Yu; I did not want him to see me sad.
“Don’t be scared, Tan Jiao.” Zhuang Yu sounded calm. “There’s always a reason behind everything. Even if it violates the laws of physics we are familiar with, it cannot break the laws of quantum mechanics and the basic rules of the universe. Something must have happened to you at the intersection of timelines, or in other words, the time point that is the beginning and the end. Moreover, the thing that happened to you even affected the people around you. That’s because it seems like the people that know you are also living in your irregular timeline. But don’t be scared. Everything will be fine when you solve the mystery that’s waiting at the end.”
“O-okay,” I practically answered while biting my lips. I only half-understood what Zhuang Yu said just now.
“That is why I have to come back.” Zhuang Yu’s voice became soft and warm. “The two people you talked about seem to be heading toward danger. Not only do they have to deal with time jumping, but they are also about to deal with a terrifying fire. And, my best friend will be moving on a few days later. I will forget everything that happened today, and she’ll still be like a shadow in my memory. I will head toward the opposite direction, but I believe I will see her again. I know I can’t be of much help, but I want to at least be by her side.”
