Inside the room.
Qin Yu shook his head and said, “There’s no need for that. We can settle the aftermath by ourselves.”
Little Qi shrugged nonchalantly. He didn’t try to talk Qin Yu into it, and neither did he probe deeper into the details concerning the medicine industry. His eyebrows simply shot up as he asked once more, “Do you really not need it? I’m already here. If we can settle this matter once and for all, we can avoid complications in the future.”
“There’s really no need for that,” Qin Yu replied. “Special District 9 is different from the Development District and other places. Conflicts can’t be resolved just by killing everyone that opposes you. Besides, the people on top of me have no intention of worsening the conflict. They just hope for everything to settle down as soon as possible.”
“Alright then. It’s fine as long as you know what you’re doing,” Little Qi nodded as he fiddled with a cup of water. “After you go off, I won’t be returning to the Wasteland District or staying in this area for the time being. So, you should make sure to settle your problems properly.”
Qin Yu was taken aback. “What are you going to do? Where are you going?”
“I’m going to settle a friend’s job. I might have to travel quite far away,” Little Qi said. “It’s nothing much, you don’t have to care about it.”
Qin Yu looked at Little Qi with a worried frown as he suggested, “Why don’t you just stay behind? Let’s manage the medicine route together. It’s safer than you roaming all around the place.”
“Forget it!” Little Qi waved his hand leisurely. “Being in your place is too frustrating for me to handle. Even when an enemy is out to kill you, you still have to think twice before stabbing into the enemy’s vitals when retaliating. Hah, I’ll never get into such a line of work. I think the carefree world outside is more suited for me.”
“Sigh, I can’t be bothered to argue with you.” Qin Yu knew Little Qi’s personality, so he didn’t try to persuade him otherwise. Instead, he asked, “When are you leaving?”
“In a moment’s time,” Little Qi replied.
Qin Yu was stunned, “So fast?”
“You don’t need me to settle the aftermath anyway, so what use is me staying here? It’s just a waste of time,” Little Qi said. “I need to rush over to meet that friend. Stay here and recuperate well from your injuries. You can make use of this downtime to flirt with that feisty lass too.”
“… Can’t you stay here for another two more days?”
“We’ve already been together for almost ten years, is that not long enough for you?” Little Qi said as he rose to his feet. “I really have something up, and I can’t drag it out any longer.”
It was at this moment that Old Cat entered the room and said with a smile, “I got the people here to get us some food. Let’s drink a bit later on, what do you say?”
“Nay,” Little Qi replied. “We’re going to set off soon.”
“You’re already leaving?” Old Cat was stunned. “But we just arrived here! Aren’t you in too much of a hurry?”
“I can rest easy as long as he’s fine,” Little Qi replied. “I have some stuff on hand. Let’s hang out together some other time.”
Old Cat turned to Qin Yu and said, “I already got them to prepare the dishes.”
“Forget it, If he wants to go, let him go then,” Qin Yu said. “There’ll be plenty of chances for us to meet in the future.”
“What a pity!” Old Cat lamented. He turned to Little Qi and said, “The next time you come to Songjiang, I’ll show you what true decadence is!”
“Haha, sounds good!” Little Qi had a decent impression of Old Cat. He felt that the latter’s forthright personality was quite interesting, so he nodded his head and said, “I’m looking forward to it then.”
“It’s not convenient for me to see you out, so I’ll say my farewells to you here,” Qin Yu shouted from his bed.
“Just lie there and rest,” Little Qi waved his hand relaxedly.
“Come come, I’ll send you off instead,” Old Cat said. “I’ll have our brothers to get you some petrol.”
“Sure.”
Just like that, Little Qi left the room with Old Cat without saying anything else to Qin Yu.
…
Twenty minutes later.
Little Qi received a few barrels of petrol and food for the journey from Old Cat before he and his group left in two cars.
As soon as Little Qi’s car was out of sight, Old Cat immediately sprinted all the way back to Qin Yu’s room.
“He left?” Qin Yu asked.
“Un, he has left,” Old Cat replied with a nod. “What’s your relationship with him?”
Qin Yu pondered for a moment before replying honestly, “We’re both orphans who grew up together under an old man. When we were younger, we begged for alms together and headed into the mountains to do all sorts of work… Even though we don’t have blood relations, we’re closer than real brothers.”
“The old man you spoke of is your adoptive parent?”
“That’s right,” Qin Yu replied with a nod.
“Where’s he now?”
“… He died of an illness a few years ago.”
“What bad luck,” Old Cat sighed deeply. “That old man sounds like a kind-hearted guy.”
Hearing those words, Qin Yu explained softly, “That old man is not bad at heart, but he had some motives for adopting us too.”
“Some motives?”
“We had to hand over all of the money and rations that we earn from working, but in return, he’ll take care of our meals,” Qin Yu replied with a smile. “Back then, Special District 9 had just been established, and things were still quite chaotic. There were many people in the Development District whose children were still young, and they couldn't feed them if they were to work on their own. So, everyone ended up huddling together for survival. Besides, as a group, it’s more unlikely for us to be bullied too.”
“Ah, I see,” Old Cat nodded in response. Out of curiosity, he asked again, “Did Little Qi serve in the military before? He doesn’t seem like an ordinary person from how he does stuff.”
“Nah, he learned his skills off the street,” Qin Yu replied. “The same goes for me too.”
“Bullshit. Is it possible to learn such skills by yourself?” Old Cat replied in disbelief. “I have been learning shooting in the Police Bureau all this while, but I’m still unable to keep up during operations. As soon as I lose my cool, I’ll be shooting like I’m drunk. How in the world can anyone learn this by himself? I don’t believe it!”
Qin Yu pondered for a moment before replying, “How do you think Qi Lin managed to rank so highly in the Police Bureau’s shooting competition then? Did he have a one-to-one teacher, or was there anyone who guided him step-by-step?”
Old Cat froze in place.
“To you, it doesn’t matter whether you are skilled or not. As long as Superintendent Li remains in power, there’ll always be a place for you,” Qin Yu said with a smile. “However, the same doesn’t go for us. If we were to stumble in crucial situations, who would dare to bring us around in the future?”
“That’s true,” Old Cat replied with a nod.
“Sigh, Little Qi didn’t have it easy either. At least I don’t remember my parents at all… but he saw his parents dying at home,” Qin Yu said with a deep sigh. “So, his personality has been different from others ever since he was young. The old man would always scold him, saying that he’s a thorn and an ingrate. Heh.”
“How did his parents die?” Old Cat asked curiously.
Qin Yu pondered for a moment before replying, “Never mind. Let’s not talk about this behind his back.”
…
On the road, Little Qi was sitting on the passenger seat with his arms crossed, deep in sleep.
The scenery outside the car retreated swiftly as it cruised toward the north.
He had driven for over a thousand kilometers within two days before saving Qin Yu at Fengbei, but before he took his leave, he didn’t even eat a mouthful of warm rice.
From this, it could be seen that the brotherly bonds between them weren’t as simple as Qin Yu put it out to be.
…
Along the corridor.
Yong Dong contemplated for a long while before he finally knocked on Qin Yu’s door.
“Who is it?” Old Cat shouted.
“It’s me,” Yong Dong replied softly. “Let’s have a talk!”
