Chapter 391: Secret of the Underground Garage
She was a princess who lived in a castle, she was born with a golden spoon and was meant to live a great life.
But he didn’t think she was happy.
Instead, he found her lonely.
The night he had carried her home, she rejected the honey water offered by her housekeeper, and had huddled under the sheets alone like an abandoned kitten.
He had never been nosy, and especially not towards a woman, but in that moment, he couldn’t help feeling sympathetic.
Without hesitation, he alighted from the car and took the cigarette from her mouth.
His brows lifted when he recalled his actions, and his finger accidentally tugged a page and tore it.
Sheng Xian, are you crazy?
She has nothing to do with you. Forget about her smoking, you even tossed an entire pack of cigarettes.
You became a human shield just because she sneezed from the wind.
You volunteered to be her driver when she was going home.
Sheng Xian, are you a masochist?
…
That weekend, Lu Jingyan stayed at home to recuperate. Fortunately, she worked out regularly, and was in good health. She had taken drowsy medicines and was mostly asleep during her weekends. By Sunday night, she was almost fully recovered.
On Monday, she woke up before dawn, perhaps because she had slept too much.
As it was still early, she lazed about in bed with her phone and waited till her alarm rang before preparing for the day.
After her shower, she took her phone, prepared to head down for breakfast when her phone rang.
It was Lu Hongcheng, who hadn’t been home in a few days.
Lu Jingyan answered the call, before she could greet him, Lu Hongcheng asked, “Have you arranged the task I mentioned last week?”
He mentioned two things last week.
One was her matchmaking session and the other was for his business partner’s daughter to go viral.
She didn’t even know who she was being matched to, so Lu Hongcheng must be referring to the second matter. “Mmh, she’s viral.”
“Which day?”
“What time?”
Lu Hongcheng asked a few simple questions before moving on to more important matters, “The guy I wanted to introduce to you arrived yesterday afternoon. I have arranged for a dinner date, my secretary will send you the details later. Oh right, he likes classical music, remember to touch on it during your conversation to show your interest.”
Lu Jingyan lowered her gaze, shielding her emotions as she replied, “Mmh.”
Lu Hongcheng seemed as though he was delegating work to his subordinate and hung up after she replied.
Lu Jingyan listened as the line went dead. Last Saturday evening, when she went downstairs for her medication, she had heard Auntie Sun updating Lu Hongcheng on the household matters. She had also mentioned that Lu Jingyan was ill.
But Lu Hongcheng didn’t mention it during their call.
Lu Jingyan stood in the bathroom for a while, and walked downstairs calmly as though she hadn’t received Lu Hongcheng’s phone call.
Monday was the busiest day of the week. Lu Jingyan was swamped with work all the way till 4pm.
Chen Kai drank too much on Friday night and ended up hospitalized for two days. Today, he was back to his normal self and had resumed his usual chatter on the group chat, “Sisters, shall we go out today?”
Song Xian was a relatively easy going person, “Sure.”
Chen Kai tagged Lu Jingyan, “What about Baby Yan?”
Lu Jingyan, “I can’t make it tonight, let’s go tomorrow.”
Chen Kai asked, “Why not? Are you busy tonight?”
…Mmh, Lu Hongcheng arranged a matchmaking…
Lu Jingyan stopped typing.
Her parents passed away on her high school graduation day due to an accident, and at that time, she no longer fought for their attention as she had done as a child.
Her parents seemed to have forgotten her existence, and would rarely call her.
She still remembered the call informing her of their death, it was the first news she had heard from them in two months.
She wasn’t sure if she was sad or confused about the news.
Their death felt like a dream, and after the funeral, Lu Hongcheng raised her.
Lu Hongcheng cherished her more than her parents, she didn’t become poor because of her parents death, she was still the princess of the Lu family.
It was only later did she realize Lu Hongcheng had an ulterior motive.
When life was measured by money and power, kinship and blood relation became worthless.
Lu Hongcheng wasn’t all that bad, he just loved money and power more.
Lu Hongcheng wanted to use her marriage as a tool to build a stable and everlasting contract for his business.
He started to introduce her to guys before she had even graduated from university.
Initially, when she wasn’t interested, Lu Hongcheng didn’t mind much as she was still young and had many other opportunities.
But as she kept growing older, and the young ladies from the other families started forming marriage ties, Lu Hongcheng’s patience started to wane.
Lu Hongcheng was particularly anxious this year, and had started to interfere in her personal life, reminding her several times to stop partying.
Lu Jingyan didn’t want to attend the matchmaking but she didn’t want to argue with Lu Hongcheng so she went whenever he asked her to and the matter would end there.
In the past, she would always tell Chen Kai and Song Xian when Lu Hongcheng arranged a date for her. Sometimes, when she met a strange character, she would talk about it in the chat group.
But today, she didn’t want Chen Kai to know about it.
Mainly because she was afraid Sheng Xian would find out.
Lu Jingyan hesitated for a while and deleted the back portion of her message, replying with a “Mmh”.
She wanted to take down Sheng Xian and to reduce the difficulty and to appear more sincere, it was understandable to hide the date from him.
But why was she afraid?
They were even together? Why was she afraid?
It seemed as though she was committing adultery.
…
Lu Hongcheng was clearly very pleased with the man he wanted to introduce Lu Jingyan, he was so worried he had given her a call in the morning to remind her to be on time.
Based on appearance, he was the best out of everyone Lu Hongcheng had introduced her to.
But it was just based on appearance. After just a couple of sentences, the conversation ended.
