Chapter 673: When the Rain Continues
With his arms crossed, Brother Xiao looked at the cluster of buildings in the distance before beckoning to his companions, saying, “Come, let’s head back now.”
…
In the Police Bureau.
A livid Liu Baochen stomped his way to Squad 3’s common working space and glowered at Qin Yu.
“What’s wrong, Platoon Commander Liu? You have something for me?” Qin Yu asked with a leisurely tone.
“… I told you to investigate the lead at Dirt Street. Why did you go to Wu Wensheng’s house instead?” Liu Baochen was seething with fury, such that he was practically spitting words out of his gritted teeth. “Just what are you up to?”
“We went to Wu Wensheng’s house in order to better understand the situation,” Qin Yu replied with a shrug.
“We still haven’t managed to make sense of what has happened yet, so it’ll be hard for me to carry out an investigation over at Dirt Street right away. That Dajun person is a key personnel to the case, especially since Wu Yao was headed there to save him. Is there anything wrong with my decision to head to the Wu Family to find out more about him?”
“You don’t need to worry about how I investigate the case. I’ll be the one calling the shots, and you just have to follow my orders obediently. Understood?” Liu Baochen hissed angrily.
Qin Yu narrowed his eyes at those words. He crossed his arms and said, “Platoon Commander Liu, I advise you not to talk to me with such a tone. With my position and rank, I also have the right to determine how this case should be handled.”
Liu Baochen sneered coldly. He leaned in and whispered into Qin Yu’s ears, “I have advice for you too. As long as you are in Platoon 4 and under Vice Superintendent Wen, you better tuck in your tail and lower your head. I might be unable to touch you, but what about those brothers under you then?”
Qin Yu’s eyes narrowed coldly upon hearing those words.
Liu Baochen stood upright, pointed to Zhu Wei, and ordered imposingly, “Tonight, you’ll be bringing these two over here to camp at Dirt Street till tomorrow morning!”
“What are we camping there for?”
“We received a lead that someone in Dirt Street Residence 46-8 has been smuggling guns, so you are to head there to keep an eye out on their activities,” Liu Baochen coldly ordered.
“You should be well aware that a police officer is not to leave their position while he’s a stakeout. If I were to catch any of you neglecting your duty, be prepared to be punished severely!”
Zhu Wei’s face darkened lividly. He gritted his teeth furiously before replying with suppressed rage, “Yes, Platoon Commander Liu. I’ll head over right now.”
“It’s cold outside, so remember to dress warmly. Hahaha!” Liu Baochen smirked triumphantly as he turned around and left the area.
After Liu Baochen was gone, Zhu Wei smashed his fist into the table and cursed, “That dumb twat Madame Liu only knows how to use this sort of meaningless tricks to disgust us!”
“I was still thinking that Wu Yao might have been killed by one of his enemies, but the fact that Liu Baochen came here to vent his anger shows otherwise,” Qin Yu analyzed with a frown. “The fact that he came here right after we messed with Old Wu shows that there’s something more to Wu Yao’s death than we know about.”
“Yeah, it’s pretty clear that Wu Yao was killed over a conflict with the gun smugglers,” Wun Sen nodded in agreement. “I reckon that Yuan Ke pulled some strings in order to put Madame Liu in charge of this case. Yuan Ke might have thought that you’re intentionally making things difficult for him by looking for Old Wu earlier today, that’s why he sent Madame Liu here to lash out at you.”
“That asshole!” Zhu Wei cursed in anger. “He’s obviously toying with us by having us stakeout at Dirt Street! Fuck, I shan’t go. He can go and charge me for all he likes!”
Hearing those words, Wun Sen shook his head and advised, “Just bear with it this once. If you fail to do as he says, there’s a good chance that he’ll have you charged on the counts of negligence of duty and insubordination by tomorrow morning.”
“… Forget it, I was the one who ran my mouth. Heh, I guess I shall give him some face this time,” Qin Yu said with a wry smile. “You can head back and rest now, I’ll do the stakeout at Dirt Street.”
“Don’t talk nonsense. How can I let you do it?” Zhu Wei immediately interjected.
“Don’t worry, I rested well the last few days,” Qin Yu said as he got up from his chair. “I’ll take our two little friends there.”
After having gone through several incidents together, Zhu Wei and Qin Yu’s relationship had already gone beyond the point of needing courteous hypocrisy anymore.
So, Zhu Wei didn’t stand on ceremony and replied, “I’ll be leaving tonight’s shift to you then. I’ll help you handle stuff tomorrow, so you can rest up after the stakeout.”
“Sounds good.” Qin Yu nodded.
…
Eight at night.
Qin Yu wore a thick military coat as he sat inside a car with its engine turned off. He crossed his arms to huddle himself as he said, “Xiaohao, come back. The two of you can sleep if you’re tired. I’ll handle the stakeout for the latter half of the night.”
“I’m not tired,” Ding Guozhen replied. “This is my first time camping outside on duty. Hehe, I’m too excited to sleep.”
“… Alright then, I’ll be leaving the stakeout to you. I’ll be hugging Xiaohao to sleep later on,” Qin Yu said with a teasing smile. “If you start to feel tired, I’ll let you use your cup to energize a bit.”
Ding Guozhen grinned at Qin Yu and said, “Are you serious? I really brought it.”
Qin Yu was flabbergasted to hear that. “Are you really that sexually deprived?”
“… Bro, to be honest with you, even if I were to spend the whole night getting down to business, I still feel like I’m unable to get my fill. My hands might be tired, but my mind is still brimming with energy.”
Speaking up to this point, Ding Guozhen leaned toward Qin Yu and asked, “Do you think that I’m ill?”
Qin Yu was stifled for a long while before he closed his eyes and remarked, “No wonder they say youth is great!”
Ding Guozhen laughed a little before he lowered his gaze to fiddle with his phone.
There was a long moment of silence before Qin Yu couldn’t stand his curiosity anymore and asked, “You really brought the cup here?”
“I was just kidding around. Do I look like someone so insensible as to bring that sort of stuff to work?”
“… Ah.”
“Bro, why are you asking that question?”
“Nothing much. I was just thinking of borrowing your wife for a use,” Qin Yu replied calmly.
“Downright despicable.”
“Hahaha!” Qin Yu chuckled softly at that remark. He took out his e-cigarette and took a puff before saying, “I think you should be able to fare well in the squad with your personality.”
Barely after those words were spoken, the car doors suddenly opened, and Fu Xiaohao settled into the passenger seat with a huge bunch of food.
“Where did you go?” Qin Yu asked.
“I went to the toilet and bought some snacks on my way back,” Fu Xiaohao said as he tore open one of the bags and passed a steaming hot meat biscuit over to Qin Yu. “Here, Vice Platoon Commander Qin. Have a bite.”
“Wow, you’re quite generous. Your family must have given you quite a bit of pocket money before sending you off to Songjiang,” Qin Yu commented in surprise.
“Like hell he’d have any pocket money.” Ding Guozhen rolled his eyes. “He borrowed the money from me earlier.”
“Tsk, busybody. It’s not like I won’t return you your money!” Fu Xiaohao berated Ding Guozhen as he grabbed another bottle of a beer, which was not cheap at all, and passed it over to Qin Yu. “Vice Platoon Commander Qin, you should have a drink too.”
Qin Yu took a good look at Fu Xiaohao, and after a moment of silence, he said, “Xiaohao, you don’t need to spend too much money on me. Let’s be more casual around one another. You won’t tire yourself out this way, and I’ll feel more at ease too.”
Fu Xiaohao waved his hand and said, “Don’t worry about it. I’m a newcomer here, and the occasion happens to be just right this time. You need not feel burdened by it.”
“Mm. Come, let’s dig in together!” Qin Yu said.
With this, the trio began munching on their supper.
…
Eleven at night.
A call arrived at the Black Street Sector Police Bureau’s call center.
“Hello, this is the Black Street Sector Police Bureau.”
“I’m here to report a case.”
“Yes, please speak.”
“The culprit behind the Jiangnan rubbish dump murder case is currently at Mapleforest Road Charity Apartments, Block 2, Flat 606,” the person in the phone explained very curtly. “I’m not joking, the culprit is inside the flat right now. If you arrive any later, you might just miss him.”
