Chapter 673: When the Rain Continues
The following morning.
Liu Baochen was in his living room eating breakfast when he told his wife, “I won’t be coming back tonight. I’ll be meeting a client.”
“Heh, a client to meet? Who are you going to fool around with this time?” Liu Baochen’s wife narrowed her crescent eyes as she asked with a sneer.
“It’s really a client,” Liu Baochen replied as he slurped on his porridge. “Yuan Ke called me out. I can’t turn him down.”
“Yuan Ke isn’t in the Police Bureau anymore, but you still have to listen to his orders?”
“He might be gone, but our ties are still there. Besides, he hasn’t treated me unfairly ever since he took over the company; in fact, he has been giving more than what Yuan Hua used to give me,” Liu Baochen said.
He grabbed his black wallet and whipped out a whopping 8,000 dollars from within before slamming it on the table imposingly. “Looks great, doesn’t it?”
Liu Baochen’s wife picked the money and swiftly counted it. Then, she looked at Liu Baochen and asked doubtfully, “Only 8 grand?”
“Yeah, 8 grand,” Liu Baochen replied meekly.
“You aren’t hiding anything?”
“I wouldn’t dare.”
“Let me check.”
“Hey, can you respect me a little? I’m your husband!” Liu Baochen howled in agitation.
“Respect my ass!” Liu Baochen’s wife replied as she tenaciously moved her hands all around Liu Baochen’s body.
Two minutes later, she managed to dig out another 2,000 dollars from the inner pocket of Liu Baochen’s coat. Her face immediately morphed into a ferocious lioness as she roared, “Liu Baochen, you sure have grown bold. To think that you would try hiding money from me now, huh?”
“You need to at least leave some money for me for social outings!”
“What kind of social outing would need 2 grand?”
“You also know that Wen Yonggang just got transferred over to our Police Bureau as the vice superintendent. He’s building up his following at the moment, so I’ll need this money to maneuver around and build some relations,” Liu Baochen explained with a humble attitude. “I really need the money, so don’t confiscate it.”
“I’m not an unreasonable person. I know that you’ll need money to bond with your colleagues, so you can get it from me whenever you need it. That being said, I’ll be expecting you to report your expenses to me in detail,” Liu Baochen’s wife replied as she stuffed the 2,000 dollars into her apron. “Alright, you should be getting to work now.”
“I deserve some human rights too!” Liu Baochen craned his neck and shouted angrily.
However, Liu Baochen’s wife didn’t pay him any heed. She walked into the kitchen and began cleaning the place up.
Seeing how his wife refused to budge on her ground at all, Liu Baochen could only helplessly finish his porridge before changing into his uniform. After which, he dropped by his daughter’s room.
“Morning, daddy,” a 10-year-old girl dressed like a princess greeted Liu Baochen with a sweet smile.
Liu Baochen squatted down and kissed the little girl on her forehead, asking, “It’s a holiday today, right? What are you doing in the afternoon?”
“Mummy is bringing me to grandma’s house.”
“That’s good. You should visit grandma often whenever you have time. She’s getting old, and she misses you a lot,” Liu Baochen said as he fondled his daughter’s head dotingly. “Daddy bought you a present yesterday, and it’s on my bookshelf right now.”
“Really?”
“Go and get it. Don’t let mummy see, alright?”
“Thanks, daddy!” The little girl wrapped her hands around Liu Baochen’s neck and gave him a good smooch before dashing out of the room.
The morning rays of the sun seeped into this warm home as Liu Baochen put on his coat and left energetically.
…
Seven-thirty at night, in the Majestic Palace Entertainment City.
“Come, get a woman here to accompany our Platoon Commander Liu!” Xiao Jiu shouted out to one of the waiters.
“It’s alright, there’s no need for that,” Liu Baochen rejected Xiao Jiu’s goodwill with a grin. “Let’s dive right into matters first.”
“You sure you don’t need it?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. The women here have a smell, and I need to go home later on. Hahaha,” Liu Baochen replied with a chuckle.
“You really should be awarded the Most Loyal Husband Award!” Yuan Ke remarked as he walked out of the washroom. As he wiped his hands dry, he asked, “You should have received the request for cooperation from the Jiangnan Sector Police Bureau, right?”
“Yeah, I saw it earlier in the day,” Liu Baochen replied with a nod.
“We don’t have a photo of the culprit who killed Wu Yao, just sketches,” Yuan Ke said as he took a sip of water. “Platoon Commander Liu, I’ll need you and your brothers to focus your efforts on this case. I’ll be deeply grateful to you if you can catch those fixers.”
“I have the photos of the fixers who killed Wu Yao,” Liu Baochen suddenly spoke up.
“You have them?” Yuan Ke was stunned by the sudden news.
Liu Baochen opened up his bag and took out a photo of Brother Xiao from within. He placed it on the table and said, “Take a look. Isn’t he the same person as the one in the sketches?”
Yuan Ke picked up the photo and looked at it for several seconds before remarking, “Now that you said it, they do look alike to one another.”
“They are the same person,” Liu Baochen insisted. “You recall that I’ve been handling a gun smuggling case recently, right? I caught a few of the minor distributors, and one of them provided me with a CCTV image. I got the photo from there.”
“Oh? The details fit as well,” Yuan Ke said as he put the photo back down. “I heard that the culprits who killed Wu Yao deal with guns.”
“Yeah. As soon as I received the reports from the Jiangnan Sector Police Bureau, I immediately knew that they were the same person,” Liu Baochen said with a nod.
“That’s really a pleasant surprise,” Yuan Ke spoke in delight. “Since you’ve been tracking this case all this while, you’d have more leads than those over at Jiangnan. Do whatever you need to and track down the current locations of the culprits.”
“Wu Yao was killed in Jiangnan, so shouldn’t this case be handled over on their side?” Liu Baochen asked.
“Wu Wensheng has quite some influence in Jiangnan Sector, so I reckon that he’ll pull some connections with the higher-ups over this matter,” Yuan Ke explained. “It’s only a matter of time before the Black Street Sector Police Bureau receives an order to cooperate with the Jiangnan Sector Police Bureau.”
“I understand,” Liu Baochen nodded.
“Platoon Commander Wu, I need you to do whatever you can for this case,” Yuan Ke said as he patted Liu Baochen’s thigh. With a slightly deeper but quieter voice, he said, “If you can exact vengeance for Wu Yao, you can be assured that Wu Wensheng will reciprocate the favor.”
“Hehe, I got it,” Liu Baochen replied.
“Ah right, I got too caught up with talking about business that I forgot about it,” Yuan Ke suddenly remarked with a smile. “Here, I got some cigarettes while I was at Fengbei a while back, and I brought two packets here for you.”
Liu Baochen was taken aback for an instant before he quickly replied with hypocritical humility, “You’re too kind, Yuan Ke. You’ve always been looking out for me. I feel bad about it.”
“We’re brothers, this is nothing at all.”
…
Eight at night.
Platoon 4 of the Black Street Sector Police Bureau were all working overtime, gathering inside a meeting room for a discussion.
On the blackboard in front of the room, Liu Baochen pointed his finger at Brother Xiao’s photos and spoke authoritatively, “Based on the accounts of eye-witnesses, he’s the culprit behind Wu Yao’s murder. He’s also the mastermind of the gun smuggling case that we’ve been investigating all this while. Just a while ago, the Police Headquarters have ordered the Police Bureaus of the five sectors to put together a common investigation squad and crack the case within a month.”
Looking at the photo on the blackboard, Qin Yu immediately identified the person on the photo to be the person whom he had encountered back at Jiangzhou, the fixer who kidnapped Kang-ge back then.
This was an important lead. If Qin Yu were to speak it aloud, the investigation team would immediately have a direction to work on.
