Special District 9 Chapter 165: Opportunistic Brother Yuan

In the morgue.

Wu Wensheng looked at his son, whose neck was filled with gaping holes, with a blank look in his eyes. He could hardly believe what he was seeing at the moment.

On the road.

A darkened-faced Yuan Ke held onto his phone as he asked, “Which morgue is he in? I need the address… Is his father there? Thanks, I got it. See you.”

After hanging up the phone, Baldie turned to Yuan Ke and asked, “He’s confirmed to be dead?”

“Yeah,” Yuan Ke replied with a nod.

“This is… I really don’t get it… I mean, how the hell did this happen??” Baldie was having trouble trying to make sense of the situation. “Wasn’t he just released from the Police Bureau a while ago? How did he end up getting into the morgue in the next moment?”

Yuan Ke was silent for a long while before he finally started explaining, “I heard it’s a conflict over some gun trade payment. He was stabbed by some foreign fixers.”

“But he’s someone who pretty much has the Jiangnan Sector under his thumb! Doesn’t he have subordinates to resolve this kind of minor conflict for him? It doesn’t seem right for him to have to make a move by himself!” Baldie still found this matter far too unbelievable. “How much money is involved here?”

“80 grand.”

“What did you say? 80 grand?!” Baldie was utterly flabbergasted. “What the fuck? Is he a retard? Or does he have his face printed on the notes of that 80 grand or something? To actually lose his life over a mere 80 grand… Wow, I really don’t know what to say.”

“It’s not a matter of money; it’s about face. He’s too used to getting his way in Jiangnan Sector, but he happened to meet a bunch of foreign fixers who doesn’t recognize his name,” Yuan Ke explained softly.

“I went to ask Wu Yao’s henchmen about this matter, and it seems like the fixers just wanted money, but Wu Yao refused to give it to them and even slapped their faces… In the end, those fixers got provoked and stabbed him in the neck.”

“… They got too arrogant over the past two years,” Baldie said with a sigh. “Ever since Wu Wensheng got selected as a Chief Senator, he had been dominating all of the lucrative businesses in Jiangnan Sector. That’s why Wu Yao got ahead of himself. With just a sip of wine, he thinks the entire world is his.”

“I didn’t think that he’d be this unreliable.” Yuan Ke was also quite frustrated about this matter too. “I’ve just finished discussing the partnership with him and prepared the goods to ship over to him, but he suddenly drops dead at a moment like this. Goddamnit, our luck really is shit.”

“What’s your current plan at the moment?” Xiao Jiu asked from the driver seat.

“Of Songjiang’s Five Sectors, we have only been able to penetrate the markets of two of them so far,” Yuan Ke analyzed. “If we wish to meet the sales target set by Prosperous Dragon, we’ll definitely have to enter Jiangnan. Wu Wensheng has a strong foothold in Jiangnan Sector’s politics. If we can get him on the same boat as us, even Fatty Xing will have to re-evaluate our influence in Songjiang.”

“Wu Yao is still an easy nut to crack, but Wu Wensheng is a wily old fox,” Baldie pondered for a moment before remarking. “With the younger one dead, it’s hard to say whether the old one would want to continue working with us.”

“That’s why we need to make use of this opportunity to build a close relationship with Wu Wensheng,” Yuan Ke replied as he looked out of the window with narrowed eyes. “If we can dig out the culprit who killed his son and exact vengeance for him, the rest will be all negotiable.”

“That won’t be easy,” Xiao Jiu shook his head and replied. “The fact that those fixers dared to kill Wu Yao likely means that they are outsiders. Now that shit has struck, I reckon that they have already run as far as they could.”

“We’ll just do whatever we can and leave the rest to fate,” Yuan Ke replied. “Even if we can’t get the job done, the attitude still means something.”

“Yeah, you’re right,” Xiao Jiu nodded.

Roughly twenty minutes later.

Wu Wensheng staggered out of the hospital under the support of his close aide. Standing by his side were the higher-ranking officials of the Jiangnan Sector Police Bureau and some friends from the underworld.

It was then that a car screeched to a halt, and Yuan Ke and his group arrived at the scene.

Wu Wensheng shot a glance at Yuan Ke, but he was in no mood to trade pleasantries with the latter.

“I’ve just heard the news too, Uncle Wu… My condolences,” Yuan Ke walked up to Wu Wensheng and spoke with a solemn demeanor.

Just thinking of his son’s plight made Wu Wensheng feel as if something was constricting his throat, preventing him from breathing. However, as he was in a public setting, he tried his best to pull himself together. He turned to look at the crowd behind him and said, “I… I’ll be heading back now. Let’s leave any discussions for later. Thank you for coming.”

“Old Wu, what’s happened has happened. Don’t think too much into it.”

“The Police Bureau will do its best to investigate the matter. Rest assured, there’s no way they’ll be able to escape as long as they are still in Songjiang.”

“Wensheng, I’ll drop by to visit you tomorrow.”

“…!”

The crowd waved Wu Wensheng goodbye as they spoke some parting words.

“Once again, I’m thankful to all of you for being here.” Wu Wensheng clasped his hands together as he nodded at the crowd before getting onto his car.

Yuan Ke contemplated for a moment before he grabbed the arm of one of Wu Wensheng’s aides and said, “Let me sit in Uncle Wu’s car. I’ll have a quick chat with him.”

The aide thought about Yuan Ke’s ties with Wu Yao, and he chose to step back and gave way to him.

Yuan Ke got onto Wu Wensheng’s car and closed the door behind him. He turned to Wu Wensheng and said, “Uncle, Little Wu is my close friend. I feel uncomfortable learning that such a thing happened to him.”

“Little Yuan, you… I need some time to myself.”

As soon as Wu Wensheng got onto the car, he was already starting to lose control of his emotions. The sorrow that he had been desperately trying to repress downward to stop himself from crying earlier was starting to burst back up, and he silently wiped away the tears in his eyes.

Yuan Ke was silent for a moment before he decided to get straight to the point, “Uncle, I have friends in the Police Bureau. Rest assured. I won’t allow Little Wu to die with grievances.”

“So what if you have friends?” Wu Wensheng muttered with his head lowered as he spoke with a restrained voice. “The culprit has already gotten away!”

“I spoke to one of the people involved in the matter, Dajun,” Yuan Ke began speaking. “He said that those bunch of people has distributed a substantial amount of goods in Songjiang, and there are quite a few people who haven’t paid them yet. The fact that they dared to put their hands on Little Wu shows that they got guts. There’s a good chance that they might still be in Songjiang right now.”

Wu Wensheng slowly turned his head to look at Yuan Ke, and a long while passed before he finally squeezed a few words out of his mouth, “… I’ll be counting on you then.”

“I’m only doing what I should for my brother,” Yuan Ke replied. “Uncle, don’t get too upset over it. The elderly in the family and Little Wu’s mother will find it harder to bear if they were to see you grieving…”

Black Street Sector Police Bureau.

Qin Yu was just about to head over to Uncle Tong’s house to take a look at the old granny and the grandson when he suddenly received a call.

“Hello.”

“I got good news for you. Don’t get too excited,” Zhu Wei’s voice sounded from the other side.

“What is it?”

“Wu Yao is dead.”

“… What?” Qin Yu was baffled. “What kind of bullshit are you feeding me in the middle of the night?”

“He’s really dead. He got stabbed in his neck over twenty times in a rubbish dump in Jiangnan Sector,” Zhu Wei explained agitatedly. “He’s in the morgue right now. I heard all of the notable figures in the city went there not too long ago.”

“Are you for real?!”

“Would I lie to you on a matter like this? I heard that even Yuan Ke went there too.”

“…!” Qin Yu was stunned for a long while before he dashed out to the common working space and shouted, “Wun Sen! Are you still around?”

“What’s up?” Wun Sen, one of the Thai police officers in Qin Yu’s squad, stood up and replied.

“Quick, head over to the Logistics Department and check if they still have firecrackers!”

“Huh?”

“We’ll be lighting them up to send our Brother Wu off!” Qin Yu exclaimed as he felt the murky shadows that had been lurking in his heart clearing away in an instant. “It looks like heaven still isn’t blind yet!”

Deep at night.

Yuan Ke dialed Liu Baochen’s number and instructed, “Let’s meet tomorrow to discuss Wu Yao’s murder case.”
