Inside the interrogation room.
Qin Yu looked at Lele with crossed his arms, asking, “Do you know my relationship with Yuan Ke?”
Lele was sweating buckets. He looked at Qin Yu as he bit his tongue down from saying anything.
“I can tell you directly that I’m investigating this case because Wu Yao and Yuan Ke are planning on getting into the same bed. So, I have no choice but to get him regardless of the cost.”
Qin Yu intentionally highlighted the deeper currents beneath the case before giving out an explicit warning, “You should know that this isn’t a simple civil case. It’s a much bigger fight involving those above. If you want to foolishly stand in the midst all and become the first sacrifice in this fight, just continue on doing what you have been doing.”
“Do you have any direct evidence? You can’t charge me just because you found two corpses!” Lele bucked up his courage and replied. “It’s not like you caught me in the act or anything!”
“Do you think that we would have been able to find the corpses if no one saw you burying them?” Qin Yu replied with a cold sneer.
Lele’s body stiffened up upon hearing those words.
“You aren’t the only one involved in this case. You want to keep mum, go ahead and do it. But you should also start praying that the others don’t sell you out.” Qin Yu walked over to Lele’s side and brushed his hand across Lele’s hair before abruptly pulling out a strand of his hair.
Qin Yu fiddled with the strand of hair and commented leisurely, “If I were to place this strand of hair amidst the clothes of the corpses and conduct a DNA test against you, I wonder if that’ll be enough to have you sentenced with the death penalty.”
“You’re planning on framing me?” Lele sneered coldly. “Hah! You think that those on top of me will let it happen?”
“Do I even need to frame you?” Qin Yu tossed aside the strand of hair in disdain before bending his body forward to face Lele. “We found numerous cigarette butts beside the tire marks on the scene, and there are substances reminiscent of frozen spit beside the hole where the corpses are buried in… You think that you’re really safe just because you put on a lousy glove and tried not to leave any fingerprint on the scene?”
Lele froze upon hearing those words.
“If you want to keep quiet and tank the case alone, I won’t bother wasting my time grilling you anymore either. I’ll send you off to the forensics right now to have the tests conducted. Shall we make a bet? If I really can’t find any traces of you on the scene, I’ll let you off right away without giving you any trouble. I won’t even bother bringing the eye-witnesses in. How does that sound to you?” Qin Yu looked at Lele with raised eyebrows.
Lele clenched his fists tightly, not replying right away.
“Are you thinking about the broken wine bottle that you forgot to take away with you that day now?” Qin Yu asked once more.
Lele’s eyes slowly widened in horror.
“I don’t have to tell you whose fingerprint is on my wine bottle, right?” Qin Yu said as he jabbed his finger into Lele’s chest. “Even if you don’t say a thing, I’ll still be able to get him. Do you finally get it now?”
Lele gulped down a mouthful of saliva.
“We’re all humans made up of the same flesh and blood, so why the hell should you take the fall over that kind of scum? Is it worth it?” Qin Yu patted the metal chair as he spoke. “You go along with me, I can make you into a witness that turns state’s evidence against him. I’ll be able to plead for leniency on your behalf, and I can swear on my head that nothing much will happen to you then. But if you really want to go against me, I can tell you that there’s a lot of details in this case that we can play with.”
“P-play with?”
“The case happened four months ago, so it’s hard for us to deduce the victims’ exact times of death anymore.” Qin Yu looked at Lele as a slight smile crept onto his lips. “We can say that the girl was dead before she was thrown down, but similarly, we can also say that she was killed in the car too.”
Lele jolted upon hearing those words. His lips quivered as he said, “Y-you’re just scaring me.”
“Believe it or not, your fate is in my hands,” Qin Yu uttered coldly. “I’ve already put it out clearly to you that I’m not handling this case for redress anyone’s grievance. I just want to trip over those on top of you. If you want to ignorantly get in the way of things, the only fate that awaits you is to be made into a scapegoat.”
Lele looked at Qin Yu with his head drenched in sweat. Hie eyes were already swimming around from nervousness, and it was clear that he was on the verge of a breakdown.
“Have some time to think it through. I’m going off to sleep,” Qin Yu said as he patted Lele’s head. Right before walking out of the door, he leisurely remarked, “Also, if you’re thinking that someone will be able to fish you out or send you some info as long as you stall for time, you might want to think again. It is an important figure from the Police Headquarters who entrusted this case to us. That bit of background that Wu Yao has… Well, I wonder if it’ll be enough. Heh.”
After saying his piece, Qin Yu turned around and left.
Lele lowered his head. He scratched his head frenziedly with his cuffed hands, causing metal clanging sounds to echo within the room.
…
Around ten minutes later, in the common working space.
Zhu Wei wiped off the grease from the corner of his lips and asked, “Did it work?”
“There’s no need to interrogate him anymore,” Qin Yu said. “I think he won’t even last till tomorrow morning. That lad doesn’t have any blood ties with Wu Yao. They might be close with one another, but with the threat of death before him, I doubt that he’ll be able to hold on.”
“As long as he caves in, all of our chips will be ready. We’ll be able to move in and swipe Wu Yao,” Zhu Wei shook his leg and said.
“There’s a car key in Lele’s pocket. Did you manage to find the car?” Qin Yu asked.
“We found it,” Zhu Wei replied with a nod. “I sent our men over to check the tire to compare it with the car tire marks we found on the scene. I also got a brother from the forensics to head there to check the car interior.”
“Alright, I guess that’s all for today. Have a rest. We’ll continue tomorrow.” Qin Yu stretched his back lazily before clapping his hand and exclaiming, “Dismissed!”
“Nice! I’ll tell the ones on night shift tonight to eye Lele closely and not make sure that he doesn’t sleep a wink tonight.”
“Good.” Qin Yu nodded.
…
Seven-thirty in the following morning.
Four police officers put on a blindfold around Lele’s head and pulled him out through the backdoor, intending to bring him over to the Forensics Team.
Before getting on the car, Lele’s legs suddenly caved in, and he fell on the snowy floor on his bum, saying, “I… I won’t go…”
“Do you think you have a choice here?”
“… No… I won’t do the forensics. Tell Qin Yu that… I’ll speak…” Having spent an entire night without sleep, Lele was really utterly broken down utterly.
Four hours later.
Holding the transcript of Lele’s confession, Qin Yu turned to Zhu Wei and said, “We can make a move now. After you capture him, don’t bring him over to the Police Bureau. Take him straight to the Forensics Team and conduct the tests right away. As long as the fingerprint on the bottle tallies with his, we’ll have enough evidence to get him prosecuted.”
“Roger that!” Zhu Wei said with a nod.
…
In a certain part of the city.
After taking a bath, Brother Xiao wrapped a towel around his body as he plopped onto the sofa in the living room and asked, “How many days has it been?”
“Three days,” a brawny man watching an internet broadcast replied.
“… Heh. It has been three days, but that Dajun fellow still hasn’t gotten back to us,” Brother Xiao said as he lit up his smoke. “He must be thinking that we’re a bunch of pushovers.”
“What should we do next then?” a bald man, who was sitting by the entrance of the bedroom with a novel in his hand, asked.
“We’ll look for him,” Brother Xiao took a puff of smoke before speaking calmly.
“Now? Have you thought it through?” the brawny man asked.
“I think we’ve wasted enough time for a trifling matter at Jiangnan Sector,” Brother Xiao stood up. “No reason why we should go easy on him. Let’s do it.”
“Alright.”
The brawny man bent down and took out a gunny sack from under the table. “It’ll suffice for me to go alone.
…
Dirt Street.
With his hands tucked in his overcoat, Wu Yao’s red hair fluttered in the wind as he spoke on his phone, “Lil’ Yuan, are you in Majestic Palace now? Ah. Call me when you’re back then, I’ll entertain myself for the time being then. Let’s meet up later.”
Weng weng.
Meanwhile, two police vehicles slowed down by the intersection. Qin Yu subconsciously touched his gun holster as he instructed, “We have to make it fast, got it? As fast as possible!”
