Chapter 673: When the Rain Continues
The following night.
An influential figure of Special District 9’s Police Force stood forward and asked Fatty Xing out for a meal in the suburbs without calling for any accompaniments.
On the dining table, Fatty Xing didn’t mention all those frustrating matters that had happened in his household over the last few days, and the influential figure didn’t bring the topic there either. The two of them simply chatted about some recent affairs about Fengbei and sipped on some wine.
After having a hearty meal and a drink, the influential figure picked up his napkin and wiped the corners of his mouth before exclaiming with a smile, “Aiyo, look at how forgetful I am becoming! We are nearly done with our meal, but I’m only recalling now that I have a friend here with me today. Haha, he said that he’s interested in getting to know you, so I called him over.”
“Oh? Who is it?” Fatty Xing asked while sipping on his porridge with a lowered head.
“You’ll know once you meet him!” the influential figure said as he took out his phone and sent out a message.
Roughly ten minutes later, Superintendent Li walked through the door with an amicable smile.
“Come here, Little Li! Allow me to introduce you to a magnate of our Fengbei’s pharmaceutical industry!” Without getting up from his seat, the influential figure gestured to Fatty Xing and said, “This is Xing Feng, the man behind Prosperous Dragon Pharmaceuticals.”
“Pleased to meet you, Mr Xing!” Superintendent Li offered his hand for a handshake.
“Old Xing, this is Old Li from Songjiang’s Black Street Sector Police Bureau,” the influential figure said with a smile. “You should have heard of him before.”
Fatty Xing was stunned for a moment before his face turned incredibly dark. He stood up and said, “Senator Zuo, I’ll treat you to a meal another day. I still have other matters to attend to back at home, so I’ll be making a move first.”
Senator Zuo stood up and pressed down on Fatty Xing’s shoulder, pushing him back into the chair, “Aiyo, what’s there to rush about? Have a seat with us for a while!”
Fatty Xing looked at Senator Zuo with an awful look on his face as he said, “We haven’t even taken down the white cloth in our house yet, and you’re here introducing me to such a friend. Don’t you think that you’re going overboard here?”
Senator Zuo bent down and whispered into Fatty Xing’s ear, “To be frank with you, I am deeply reluctant to have this meal too, but far too many people have contacted me for this matter. Old Xing, if you carry on like this, it’ll only lead to both sides suffering unnecessary losses.”
Fatty Xing was visibly stunned to hear those words.
“You two have a chat, I’ll head out to have some fresh air.” Senator Zuo patted Fatty Xing’s shoulder before leaving the compartment.
In the slightly dim room, Fatty Xing sat quietly on his chair, not saying a word at all.
“Allow me to propose a toast to you.” Superintendent Li put the documents he had in his hand down on the table and said, “Have a look at this.”
Fatty Xing didn’t move.
Superintendent Li bent forward and poured himself a cup of white wine. He turned to Fatty Xing and said, “No one intended for such an accident to happen, but what’s happened has happened. Those from our generation have all been through some tough times. I can understand how you feel. Cheers.”
After saying those words, Superintendent Li, who wasn’t too good with alcohol, raised his head and gulped down the cup of white wine.
Watching all of this with his arm crossed, Fatty Xing asked with a menacing deep tone, “I lost my son, but you’re trying to wash it all away with a cup of wine. I really want to know what’s running through your mind.”
Superintendent Li coughed a bit from the sharp taste of the wine as he wiped his mouth. Then, he replied, “What else do you want?”
“Everyone who has participated in this, none of them are getting away.” Fatty Xing lifted his finger and pointed at Superintendent Li before adding on, “That includes the ones backing you.”
“Heh! It seems like you’re a terribly ambitious person,” Superintendent Li chuckled to himself before pushing the documents he had placed on the table earlier forward. “It looks like you haven’t caught wind of the movements over at Songjiang.”
Fatty Xing’s pupils dilated a little.
“The fake medicine incident has been cracked. Other than two key figures, Little Qu and Yong Dong, the other accomplices have been captured,” Superintendent Li said as he shot a meaningful glance at the documents on the table. “You might want to take a look at it first.”
Fatty Xing stared at Superintendent Li for a brief moment before his hand reached out for the documents on the table. He opened the folder and took a look at the content within.
Meanwhile, Superintendent Li took out a cigarette and waited patiently for around ten minutes.
There was not even the slightest change in Fatty Xing’s expression after looking through the documents. He asked calmly as if nothing had happened at all, “Are you trying to threaten me?”
“If you want to harp on this matter to no end, I’ll have no choice but cause an uproar in Fengbei using this matter,” Superintendent Li replied directly. “Little Qu has died in Xing Zihao’s hands. Before shooting Little Qu, he hurt one of his men because the latter failed to stop Ma Lao-er. If I manage to get my hands on that person, I wonder who he’ll choose to side with.”
Fatty Xing pressed his lips tightly together.
“The center figure of the fake medicine incident, Little Qu, has been silenced in Fengbei, and the police officers whom I have sent to investigate this matter were assaulted by the men of Prosperous Dragon Pharmaceuticals. If these details were to be exposed to the public, what do you think will happen to Prosperous Dragon’s markets and clients? How do you intend to explain this matter to the common folk?” Superintendent Li asked as he took a puff of smoke.
Fatty Xing continued looking at Superintendent Li quietly without saying a word.
Superintendent Li flicked the ashes from his cigarette before leaning a little closer to say, “Old Xing, you are a reputable figure yourself. You have both money and connections. If there had been any other way out, no one would try to kill your kids. You might think that we’re just a bunch of misfits trying to stir up trouble for you from the shadows, but can’t you see that you were the ones who first pointed a knife at us from above?
“To put it harshly, if Xing Zihao had just taken a step back, do you think that he would have landed in this plight? They only killed him because they were cornered. The culprit who killed Xing Zihao, Old Ma, could have escaped, but he chose to give himself in. Don’t you think that he’s already giving you a lot of face? Is that not enough for you to highlight the prowess and influence you command?
“Let me give you some words of advice—always leave a door open for yourself. If you continue pursuing this matter on, putting me aside, those kids who have gotten away wouldn’t just sit still and wait for their deaths. Since you aren’t going to give them a way out, you shouldn’t expect them to give you an easy time either. I hope that you can remember that you still have another two more sons.”
“Hahaha!” Fatty Xing burst into laughter. “You’re really scaring me here.”
“Old Xing, I am not a person with a lot of guts,” Superintendent Li said with a frown. “With things getting to this point, threats mean nothing anymore. I’m just stating a definite possibility that would occur if we continue walking down this path. I can assure you that I’m more frightened than you if you wish to continue this fight.”
Fatty Xing slowly stood up, grabbed his coat, and headed straight for the doorway as he said, “Don’t try to work Old Ma out. He has to pay for my son’s life. If the Ma Family dares to release its medicine in Songjiang for the next eight months, I’m not going to let it rest easily.”
Superintendent Li heaved a long sigh of relief upon hearing those words. However, he also knew that Fatty Xing’s tolerance was only temporary. The latter was only hesitating out of fear of the things that he had in hand, so the latter didn’t dare to push too hard.
After all, how could the grudge of the death of one’s son possibly be resolved with just a couple of words?
…
An hour later.
As Superintendent Li headed to Fengbei Station to return to Songjiang, he dialed Qin Yu’s number.
“Uncle Li.”
“We have talked to Fatty Xing. There won’t be any issues for the time being,” Superintendent Li said. “I’ll give you a long break. You should rest at Jiangzhou for the time being.”
“What’s going to happen to Guan Qi?” Qin Yu asked.
“He’ll be fine.”
“What about Uncle Ma?” Qin Yu asked again.
Superintendent Li sighed, not saying anything.
…
The following day.
Baldie got himself dead drunk in a bar in Songjiang, muttering, “I thought that I was being fucking loyal, but I didn’t think that I would be the one to sabotage Zhang Tian in the end.”
Xiao Jiu’s cheeks were also flushed from all of the alcohol as he mumbled, “… judged wrongly… I judged wrongly! Little Yuan… he might be more suited to take the helm than Old Yuan.”
It was then that four brawny men walked in from the outside. The leader was Brother Xiao, whom Qin Yu and the others had come into contact with back at Jiangzhou. He shot a glance at Baldie before leading his brothers up to the second floor boisterously.
At the same time, Uncle Ma was brought out from the hospital of the Police Headquarters and sent to Fengbei’s First Prison.
The First Prison was first constructed during the first riot that occurred after the establishment of Special District 9. The older folks in Fengbei habitually addressed it as… Death Prison.
