Chapter 673: When the Rain Continues
Zhang Tian and the others found themselves unable to get anything into the emotionally withered Yuan Ke at all. No matter what they said or suggested, Yuan Ke’s reply would always be to ask them to liaise with Baldie and discuss it with him.
After an inconclusive encounter, Yuan Ke was brought out of the conference room under Ol’ Three’s support.
Zhang Tian sat down on a sofa and took a sip of water. His complexion didn’t look too good.
“No matter how we look at this matter, we still aren’t able to come up with a solution to this. How are we going to settle this matter?” the middle-aged man asked with a frown.
“Isn’t Baldie around? Let him settle everything then!” Zhang Tian remarked. “Let’s all head back.”
Everyone glanced at one another before leaving the room with frustration bubbling in their chests.
Around half an hour later.
Zhang Tian sat in a car as he asked nonchalantly through his phone, “Have you managed to get into contact with the second son of Fatty Xing yet? Yes, that’s right. I want you to try sounding him out. If he’s willing to meet with us, I’ll make a trip over to Fengbei. Yes, that’s all.”
…
Another day passed.
The preparations for Yuan Hua’s funeral were mostly ready, but during this period of time, Baldie suddenly fell sick. It was a high fever, but he still gritted his teeth to tolerate it as he liaised with all of their connections to inform them of Yuan Hua’s demise and placate them.
Soon, time ticked to the afternoon.
Baldie coughed twice as he gestured for someone to open the door. At the doorway, he saw Yuan Ke, together with Yuan Hua’s wife and son, walking over.
“Aiyo, I feel awful all over. It feels like my skull is breaking apart,” Baldie got up to welcome them as he stood up. “Otherwise, I would have headed over to your place.”
“Brother, what are we going to do…” Yuan Hua’s wife suddenly broke down crying. “Old Yuan simply passed away just like that. What are we going to do in the future?”
Baldie quickly stepped forward to help her up, consoling, “Sister-in-law, come in first. Don’t cry at the doorway.”
“Uncle!”
While they were speaking, Yuan Ke’s ten-year-old son also grabbed Baldie’s sleeves and started bawling.
“Yuan Ke, bring sister-in-law into the house.” Seeing the two of them, Baldie didn’t feel too good on the inside either. He closed the door and got everyone to bring Yuan Hua’s wife and son in.
It took a great deal of words before Baldie finally calmed down Yuan Hua’s wife and son.
“Sister-in-law, Old Yuan’s death is my fault,” Baldie told everyone with a guilty look on his face. “I shouldn’t have let him go there that day. So, when I see you all acting in such a manner… I also don’t really know what to do.”
Yuan Ke sat by the side with his head lowered, not saying a word at all.
Yuan Hua’s wife wiped her tears and looked at Baldie with reddened eyes. She sniffled a little before saying, “Baldie, since things have gotten to this point, I’ll be frank with you.”
“We’re one family. There’s no need for you to stand on ceremony.”
Even though Baldie could be domineering and calculative at times, he was deeply loyal to Yuan Hua.
“You also know that Old Yuan has quite a few women out there over the years,” Yuan Hua’s wife said with a quivering voice as she hugged her son. “No one dared to mess around when he was still around, but now that he isn’t here, those women would surely pull their connections in the company to deal with me and my son. What are we to do then?”
Upon hearing those words, Baldie immediately replied vehemently, “What do you mean by that? You are the sister-in-law that we recognize, and Lil’ Xuan is the eldest son of the Yuan Family. Your words should be the ones that count in the Yuan Family!”
“It’s not as simple as that, brother,” Yuan Hua’s wife replied gloomily. With her eyes fixated on Baldie, she said, “Have you heard about it? It was just a day ago that news about Yuan Hua’s demise reached the company, and there are already people who are trying to liaise with Fatty Xing privately!”
Hearing those words, Xiao Jiu immediately interjected in agitation, “Is there really such a matter, sister-in-law?”
“I’m certain of it!” Yuan Hua’s wife exclaimed. “Zhang Tian is related to Yuan Hua’s fourth mistress. I know that they are working together on that!”
Baldie’s face turned grave as he said, “Sister-in-law, you mustn’t talk lightly about a matter like that.”
“I wouldn’t run my mouth if I wasn’t certain!” Yuan Hua’s wife insisted. “Old Yuan has connections over at Prosperous Dragon, and we would always stay in contact with one another. I heard from these connections that Zhang Tian is planning a meeting with Fatty Xing’s second son. Our connection heard everything loud and clear!”
Baldie was stunned. “Would Zhang Tian do something like this?”
“Why wouldn’t he? He was upset when Yuan Hua showed intentions of grooming Yong Dong!” Speaking up to this point, Yuan Hua’s wife suddenly broke into tears once more. “As soon as Yuan Hua was gone, he brought his men to bully us… I can tell you this, Baldie. If Zhang Tian were to attain power within the company, he’ll either start a huge purge and get rid of everyone he deems an eyesore, or he’ll take all of his men and make it on his own!”
Baldie quietly picked up his cigarette box, not saying a word at all.
“Baldie, you are Yuan Hua’s life-and-death buddy! Over the years, you are the person that he trusts the most in the company!” Yuan Hua’s wife spoke amidst sobs. “I have already discussed this matter with Yuan Ke, but the affairs of the company are simply too complicated… We don’t have the power to influence anything… So, we would rather entrust it into the hands of someone we trust!”
Baldie was stunned by those words. He turned to Yuan Hua’s wife and asked, “Sister-in-law, what do you mean by that?”
“You’ll lead our brothers to handle our business. If you’re worried that you don’t have enough say in the company, Yuan Ke and I will back you too!” Yuan Hua’s wife spoke determinedly.
“That’s right, Brother Baldie. You should become the next head of the company, and I’ll remain in the Police Bureau,” Yuan Ke said. “Since my older brother trusts you, I’ll trust you too.”
“Hehehe!”
Blade chuckled softly beneath his breath as he lit up his smoke. Then, he turned to the two of them and replied, “What are true brothers? It’s when things remain the same between two people regardless of whether they’re alive or dead, that’s what true brothers are. I, Baldie, know that money is a good thing, and the more there is, the better it is. But even if Old Yuan’s fortune were to be put right before me, I still wouldn’t touch a single cent of it.”
“Brother, I’m saying these words out of sincerity. I’m not trying to…”
“Sister-in-law, you should persuade Yuan Ke to work hard instead. Xiao Jiu and I will back him just like how we backed Old Yuan back then,” Baldie said. “I don’t lack money anymore. At my age, I’m more concerned with incurring bad karma. If Zhang Tian wants to back out, I won’t stop him. But if he wants to pull something, I’ll make him pay hell for it.”
…
Jiangzhou.
Qi Lin stood by Coco’s side as he glanced at his watch and muttered nervously, “Why isn’t he arriving yet?”
Barely after those words were spoken, three cars could be seen driving in their direction before stopping by the roadside.
“They’re here!” Qi Lin’s eyes lit up. He immediately rushed over anxiously.
Coco clutched the scarf wrapped around her neck tightly as she said solemnly, “Let’s head over to take a look.”
The crowd that was with Coco made their way over to the three cars too.
The doors of the cars opened, and Old Cat was the first to leap out. As soon as he spotted Qi Lin, he exclaimed in agitation, “Just a bit more, and you might have never seen me again!”
Qi Lin rushed up to give Old Cat a big hug as he slapped the latter’s shoulder hard. After that, he walked to the back seat of the car and Qin Yu lying inside.
“He hasn’t woken up yet?” Qi Lin asked.
Lying on a stretcher, the close-eyed Qin Yu replied, “… I’m awake, but my soul is still in Fengbei!”
“Holy shit! It’s fine as long as your body is here!” Qi Lin heaved a deep sigh of relief.
Behind the crowd, Ma Lao-er came out with a crutch as he looked around anxiously. With glaring eyes, he asked imposingly, “Where is he? Why hasn’t he picked up my phone at all?”
