Chapter 673: When the Rain Continues
“Okay, so am I going to drive the carriage?” he asked as he headed to the front of the carriage.
Both Shen Ling’s and Xiannu Liang’s eyes widened in fear as they both shouted, “No!”
****
I was absolutely speechless at this time. They don’t let a guy down easy do they? Was it that bad? I need to ask them.
“Is it that bad?” I asked them.
“It’s… safer this way, for all the parties involved,” Shen Ling replied.
“I get the distinct impression that you’re trying to spare my feelings.”
“No, I’m n—”
“You couldn’t properly drive a carriage off a cliff! Guess you can’t be a prodigy at everything, huh, you overachiever!” Xiannu Liang came in with a merciless interjection… I can respect that.
“You sound jealous.”
Xiannu Liang snorted in response. “W-What do I have to be jealous about?”
“For one, being able to achieve.”
“Y-You…!”
“And being able to construct coherent sentences, you’re not really setting the bar high here, are you?”
“Stinky Long Di!”
Shen Ling put her hand on Xiannu Liang’s shoulder and shook her head.
This was understandable, as the verbal ass-whooping that Xiannu Liang just received would need time to heal and lord knows that such a beating rendered her unable to see that there was no coming back from this.
“Shen Ling, a question.”
There was something on my mind so I put the matter of Xiannu Liang behind me, which angered her more for some reason. Hm, women.
“What is it?” she asked.
“Do you remember what happened when you killed the boss bandit back then?”
When she heard this question, her expression turned complicated. However, she still nodded to indicate she did.
I tried my best to approach the subject delicately since I saw she had issues with the situation back then.
“Can you tell me what happened back then? You unleashed a move I never saw you use again.”
I didn’t make it sound like I wanted her to use it again since Steely said that would be bad. Still, I was curious about the whole thing.
“When I emerged from my first cultivation session of the Abyss Scripture, for just a brief moment, I was in a state of enlightenment and I felt like I comprehended the essence of the Abyss,” she admitted with her head hung low.
“Oh, is that bad? It doesn’t sound bad.”
Xiannu Liang didn’t say anything and just listened. It seems she was a bit interested in the situation herself. However, she didn’t seem to judge Shen Ling and just looked on in concern.
Shen Ling grew nervous, I could see it. Bet she didn’t think she would be having this conversation today.
“… It’s not… bad,” she said after a while. “It’s just that when I used that move, it was purely on instinct. I could feel a pressure of malice that enveloped me.”
“A pressure of malice?” That didn’t sound good. “What do you mean?”
She shook her head. “I’m not sure, to be honest. It’s just… it’s the only way I can explain it.”
So there was something like this the whole time. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t want to burden you,” she replied.
“Oh…” So it’s something as simple as not wanting to be a burden, eh? I can relate to that.
“Do you believe that you are an Abyss Ghost…?” I don’t know why but I felt I had to ask this question. But I wanted to see what she thought of herself.
“Shen Ling?”
She didn’t answer the first time and only reacted when I called her name. She nodded and shook her head, but didn’t look at me the whole time.
It was a yes and no? What did this mean?
She opened her mouth as if she was about to say something.
However, before any words left her mouth, her eyes flashed before a hint of fear took hold. I knew fear, that was fear.
“What are you afraid of?”
She pursed her lips, not wanting to say anything more.
Yeah, that’s not gonna cut it. “Shen Ling, what are you hiding from—”
“Please don’t take away my cultivation technique!?” she blurted out, seemingly out of nowhere, with tears welling up in her eyes.
Well, that was unexpected. What madness has this girl been cooking up in her head?
“Ow…” she rubbed her brow with her hand, wondering what that was for. If you’re wondering what I did, I flicked her forehead.
I walked away after that. I can’t believe I was worried for this girl. “Don’t ask stupid things. I want to expect great things from you.”
She then looked at me in surprise. “You’re not going to take away the technique from me?“
I’m not gonna answer that. I just told her not to ask stupid things, and she did. As of now, my drive for social interactions for one day is pretty much exhausted.
👁🗨
Shen Ling
I calmed down and realised I was overthinking things. I mean, there are several reasons why I don’t want to disclose what little I know to Long Di.
In truth, a small part of my fear stemmed from the fact that I thought he would relieve me of my cultivation technique. I had never felt more at peace with myself than I do whenever I’m cultivating my cultivation technique and I am taken… to that place.
But a large part of it came from something else. My Auspice Gaze activated without my directive when I was about to tell him everything and I saw how the ghostly trails all around were thrashing around in a frenzy!
I’d never seen something like this before and knew that it wasn’t something good.
What made it even weirder was that when I focused on these trails and the thought of telling Long Di what I wanted to, left my mind, they returned to normal.
There was no doubt about it now. There was a great danger in telling him what I felt, what I saw. I need to keep him safe and to do that; I have to keep what I know to myself.
To make sure he stays safe, I also need to get even stronger, and this technique is required for that. I’ll be someone who can stand by his side in the future.
“Senior brother Long Di!”
He stopped and turned around to look at me, with that same cute blank look on his face.
“I will never hurt you,” I whispered to him. I wanted him to know this.
At which point, he only responded with. “I know. Now let’s go, the young ones are struggling and I want to see what’s happening.”
I couldn’t help but smile when I saw this and ran to catch up at his side, followed by Xiannu Liang, who was looking at me and then at Long Di weirdly.
B-Bam!
Several loud explosions took place, and we all walked over to see Tie Lang, Jia Yan, and Feng Yu, all engaged in combat against a particularly vicious beast!
Sorry for the late uploads guys, I have an interview coming up and I really need to ace it. PS lemme know what ya;ll think of the different perspectives of characters who are not Long Di.
