The Defeated Saintess Is On A Journey To Tame The Evil God Book 01 Chapter 04.01 - Northern District's Haze

Saturday evening, Xing Mo and Aurora attended the Starsea Mass at Saint Auroth Cathedral, sitting in the last row.

The benches were filled with believers, piously looking at the sky above the church filled with starlight, devout expressions on their faces.

On the altar at the head of the church, holding a thick scripture in her hands, Holy Nun Lilis recited in an even and devout tone.

"Above the White Tower, stars shine brightly."

"Below the White Tower, life flows like a river."

"The Starsea, in a perpetual state of flux, washes away our sins and despondency, leaving only hearts of gold."

"She said, Great Harmony will eventually come."

"Hearts of gold will eventually hang above the stars."

As the Holy Nun recited softly, the nuns washed their wands in the Starsea Spring and then lined up and started down the aisle between the benches.

They waved their wands continuously, and a gold light diffused, accompanied by a gentle breeze brushing over the faces of the believers.

Xing Mo calmly sensed the starlight permeating the air. It has been a while since she experienced such a peaceful atmosphere.

When she was a child, she stayed at an orphanage. Apart from a couple of adults wearing top hats—who often came to ask her about her memories of the shipwreck—she has hardly communicated with anyone.

At that time, Xing Mo's greatest pleasure in life has been gazing at the star-studded sky in the courtyard.

In the dark blue night sky, the stars were white at times and gold at other times, looking like gemstones floating in a dark ocean.

As she lied on the lawn and counted the stars, it felt like she was putting gemstones into her treasure chest.

Xing Mo would usually fall asleep while counting stars, and then wake up to the glow of the morning sun the next day.

On those nights when she was alone, the stars watched over her all night and protected her.

That experience made Xing Mo a loyal follower of the Goddess.

As Xing Mo was immersed in the past, she suddenly noticed something entangling around her thigh.

She turned her head and saw Aurora trembling slightly, squinting her eyes.

"So many prayers... so much faith force... so comfortable..."

Having clearly absorbed the entire faith force from the Mass, she is trembling with pleasure.

"Restrain yourself...!" Xing Mo whispered, "Stop pestering me... ah!"

......

After the Starsea Mass, Xing Mo and Aurora swept the floor in a corner of the church.

Lilis provided them two nun costumes and walked away, looking very busy.

I vaguely remember her saying before... that the bishop of Saint Auroth Cathedral currently isn't present... it seems that everything has fallen on her shoulders...

It's really hard to serve the Gods... Although Xing Mo is currently serving Evil God Aurora...

As she mused, Xing Mo glanced at Aurora, who was slacking off, and flicked her forehead with her index finger.

"Ouch."

Half an hour later, the cleaning work was finally over. The nuns packed up the cleaning tools and then retired to their rooms.

Only Holy Nun Lilis remained in the church proper, cleaning the altar.

Xing Mo joined the Holy Nun and waved her hand: "Ms. Lilis, aren't you going to rest?"

"Ms. Xing Sheng." Lilis smiled and nodded, "I will after I finish cleaning this. There was quite a bit to do today. Thank you for your help."

"It's... it's nothing~" Aurora poked her head from behind Xing Mo, a shy expression on her face.

Xing Mo stroked Aurora's head and then said to Lilis: "By the way, my instructor asked me to deliver a letter... saying that he has something to ask you..."

She took out a letter from her pocket. This letter was entrusted to her by Instructor Lucius and is probably him inquiring about the Angel's Tear.

Lilis took the letter and skimmed through it: "Lucius Phillips is your instructor? Child, I am truly happy for you. He is a talented and wise man."

"He-he..." Xing Mo rubbed her head bashfully, "Then... what is Instructor asking?"

"He's asking for an appointment with me. He wants to see the Angel's Tear with his own eyes, saying that it is for academic research and asking me to give you a reply."

As she spoke, Lilis looked up at the dome and then sighed lightly: "It's a shame, but he won't get a chance to see it."

He won't get a chance? Xing Mo suddenly felt a bit anxious: "How come... what happened?"

Holy Nun Lilis sighed softly: "I'm sure you know that Bishop Freyr Sunlight has been missing for some time now. When he went missing, he took the Angel's Tear with him."

The missing bishop has the Angel's Tear? Xing Mo creased her brow.

Why does it feel like there's more to this than meets the eye...

At this moment, hiding behind Xing Mo, Aurora suddenly spoke up: "Do you have any guesses about Bishop Freyr's whereabouts?"

"People from the Church have come to ask several times. I told them everything I could think of, but they haven't found him yet." The Holy Nun said calmly.

Xing Mo is in trouble. If the only confirmed location of Angel's Tear turns out to be a dud, she will be out of options.

"I understand. Thank you, I will pass it on to Instructor." Xing Mo bowed to Lilis.

"You're welcome, child. You should go back and get some sleep." The Holy Nun uttered with a kind smile.

"My sister and I will perform ablution and then leave." Xing Mo said.

She walked down the altar, arrived in front of the Starsea Spring, and gazed at the spring water emitting a gentle breeze.

Xing Mo reached into the spring, scooped up some water, and washed her face.

At the same time, she opened the Tree of Life's vision, and the brand on the back of her hand emitted a faint glow.

In the next moment, Xing Mo froze.

The entire spring water was dark. It was dark, a rich dark, as dark as ink.

"Wh..."

Xing Mo looked blankly at the spring water, then looked at Aurora standing next to her—the little Evil God was smiling.

"How can this be..."

The source of the black aura... it's actually the Starsea Spring?

This is a curse... a curse of death...

So the residents of the Northern District...?

Dammit... I have also been baptized... have I already been corrupted...

Xing Mo lowered her head and examined herself with the Tree of Life's vision. She was surprised to find that she is emitting a healthy green glow and wasn't surrounded by dark.

Strange... I haven't been corrupted?

"You are my retainer. There's no way this kind of low-level corruption can compare to the Tree of Life."

Aurora whispered next to Xing Mo's ear.

"Drink it. Drink it, and you will see fragments of the truth..."

Xing Mo fell silent. She just silently looked at the dark spring.

"Child, what's wrong?" Lilis stuck her head out from beside the altar and looked at the stupefied Xing Mo.

"It's nothing." Xing Mo took a deep breath, "I'm just... praying..."

She prayed to the Goddess and then immediately bent down, scooped out a bit of water, and drank it.

In an instant, pitch darkness invaded the white of her eyes. Xing Mo's vision suddenly became all dark.

However, in the darkness, a green light tore open a gap, through which Xing Mo saw the bishop kneeling in front of the Starsea Spring.

"Lord... Lord... this is blasphemy... what blasphemy..."

"Those blasphemers... no... they can never..."

Bishop Freyr trembled and murmured. He drank the spring water, and a faint black aura emanated from him.

He tightly grasped a pendant—a crystal polyhedron, transparent and limpid—hanging from his neck with his hand.

It was the Angel's Tear.

Bishop Freyr stood up and stumbled toward the church's entrance.

Before walking out the door, Xing Mo heard his last murmur: "Blackwood..."
