Special District 9 Chapter 163: Darkness

Superintendent Li still wasn’t in the office.

Instead, it was Vice Superintendent Dong who turned to look at him and asked, “Why didn’t you knock the door?”

“This is bullshit! I can’t accept this!” Qin Yu hollered with his eyes widened in rage. “How can he be put on bail?! This is nonsense!”

“It’s not a decision made by us. It’s a verdict that was made by both the Police Headquarters and the prosectors.”

“Are you playing with me?” Qin Yu pointed at himself as he howled in rage. “If we aren’t able to get him, you all should have just told us directly! We spent so much time in order to acquire the evidence needed to seal the case, but you ended letting him go on bail! What the heck is this?”

Vice Superintendent Dong was silent.

“This is ridiculous.” Qin Yu was simply feeling too indignant at the moment that he could hardly keep his emotions in check anymore. “I get it now. Could it be that you knew right from the start that it’s impossible for us to get him, but you still made me capture him so as to give Wu Wensheng a warning to stay away from Yuan Ke!”

Vice Superintendent Dong still didn’t say a word.

“Is that what Old Li is thinking?!” Qin Yu demanded an answer furiously.

Vice Superintendent Dong looked at Qin Yu with a frown for a long while before finally speaking up, “Do you know how many times have the Black Street Sector Police Bureau refused to obey a command from Songjiang’s Police Headquarters ever its establishment?”

Qin Yu continued to glare at Vice Superintendent Dong with rage seething in his eyes.

“Only once in its entire history, for this very matter!” Vice Superintendent Dong raised a single finger up as he spoke. “We have already done all that we could have done, but this is simply the result created by the society we live in. None of us can do anything about it. Do you get it now?!”

Qin Yu clenched his fists furiously.

“You can quit your job in anger, and you can also give those men who helped to fish Wu Yao out a piece of yourmind… but will that change the outcome?” Vice Superintendent Dong asked once more.

Silence fell upon the room.

A short moment later, the office’s room opened abruptly. Zhu Wei barged in and shouted at Qin Yu anxiously, “He has already signed the bailout papers and is going to leave right now! Uncle Tong is here too, and he’s very agitated at the moment…!”

Qin Yu shot a glance at Vice Superintendent Dong before rushing out of the office.

Ten minutes later, at the entrance of the Police Bureau.

Four brand new vehicles stopped by the roadside, and eight people stood beside them in the midst of the snow, smoking their cigarettes while chatting leisurely.

Wu Yao didn’t leave right away after signing the bailout forms. Instead, he stood at the entrance and lit up a cigarette.

“He’s a murderer! How can you let him go like that?!” Uncle Tong howled with all his might at the lounge of the Police Bureau. “You wear those uniforms of yours, but you let a murderer walk away scot-free right beneath your eyelids! Does this make sense? Aren’t you ashamed of yourselves?!”

His shouts echoed loudly within the building. Onlookers had gathered around, and the new interns were all looking at him silently.

Qin Yu, Zhu Wei, and the others, who had rushed down at this moment, looked at Uncle Tong with complicated looks on their faces.

By the entrance, Wu Yao spotted Qin Yu and smiled at him. He shouted over, “Any other moves that you have? If not, I’ll be leaving right now.”

“You bastard, I’ll pit my life against you!” Uncle Tong dashed forward like a madman.

“Uncle Tong!” Qin Yu shouted in astonishment as he quickly chased after him.

Chaos broke out at the entrance of the Police Bureau. The lawyer and a few other men protected Wu Yao, escorting him safely down the steps of the Police Bureau.

On the other hand, Qin Yu held onto Uncle Tong and said, “Gramps, don’t do it! Calm down a little…!”

At the bottom of the steps, Wu Yao suddenly pushed his lawyer aside and looked at Qin Yu with his head tilted haughtily, asking, “Hit me, huh? Beat me up with an electric baton, huh? You sure went all out to do me in.”

Qin Yu glared back at Wu Yao without saying a word.

“I’ll kill you!”

Uncle Tong pushed Qin Yu aside and dashed down the steps to grab Wu Yao.

Whoosh!

Those men standing beside the cars quickly rushed forward and pushed down Uncle Tong, who was going to hit Wu Yao.

“Brother Wu, your father wants you to return now,” a henchman told Wu Yao

However, Wu Yao continued stand on the spot, smoking his cigarette as he looked at Qin Yu haughtily and asked, “You like to crack cases, huh?”

“Fuck! Run away then!” Zhu Wei hollered from the back. “Let’s wait and see! We’ll have plenty of chances to get you in the future!”

“Heh!” Wu Yao chuckled to himself. “Yes, you’re right. There’ll be plenty of chances in the future. Let’s go!”

After saying his piece, he headed toward the cars with a crowd of followers around him.

Uncle Tong stared at Wu Yao’s back with despair in his eyes. He fell paralyzed on the snowy ground as he lamented, “… This shitty world… What’s the meaning of living in such a world…”

Vroom!

The loud whirring of an engine suddenly sounded on the street as a modified jeep suddenly charged forward with a mad cow, heading toward the kerb of the pavement.

“Uncle Tong…!”

Qin Yu shouted out in horror.

Peng!

A dull thud sounded, and Uncle Tong, who was sitting on top of the snowy ground a moment ago, was sent flying across the air before crashing into the steps of the Police Bureau.

“The brake is not working! Step aside!” someone inside the car shouted.

The car didn’t just stop after charging up the kerb. It continued rushing toward Uncle Tong once more.

Peng!

A second collision occurred, and Uncle Tong was squeezed between the car and the wall of the Police Bureau’s entrance.

There were at least forty people gathered around here at this very instant, and they were all stunned by what they had just witnessed.

The surroundings seemed to have fallen so silent that one could hear a pinfall.

By the roadside, Wu Yao sat inside a car as he waved to Qin Yu and shouted, “You like cracking cases, right? You should be rejoicing then! There’s another case for you to work on now! Hurry up and investigate it! Give me a call when you’re done, and I’ll raise a flag to celebrate your victory!”

The crowd stared at Wu Yao with their mouths agape, unable to believe what they had just seen and heard.

“Let’s go!”

With a psychopathic smile still lingering on his face, Wu Yao stared at Qin Yu smugly as he slowly closed the door of his car.

By the steps of the Police Bureau.

The door of the car sprung open, and a lad raised his hand up high and kneeled onto the floor. His body trembled as he shouted out, “I didn’t do it on purpose… I really didn’t mean to do it… I stole the car, so I didn’t know that the brake wasn’t working. The ground is just too slippery! I couldn’t control it and then…”

Qin Yu simply stared at the lad blankly. He couldn’t feel any rage at all; all that was left was shock.

He couldn’t figure out why Special District 9, despite the enforcement of its rules and regulations, would sometimes appear to be even more lawless than the ungoverned Development Districts…

Squeezed between a car and a building, Uncle Tong sat there with his eyes still glaringly open. He departed from this world with a heart filled with rage and despair.

An hour later.

After expending two leather belts on Wu Yao, Wu Wensheng finally pointed at Wu Yao, who was kneeling bloodied on the ground, and bellowed, “Do you know how much money I have wasted for that dumb nonsense you got yourself into?”

Wu Yao was struck to the point where his consciousness was already on the verge of fading. He kneeled on the ground, not daring to say a word at all.

“What else does his family has? Is there anyone else who can sue you?” Wu Wensheng asked while gasping for air.

“… There’s still a child… and an old lady,” Wu Yao replied weakly.

“Fuck! You better stay smart. Keep an eye out for the old lady. You’ll be in deep trouble if she messes around, got it?” Wu Wensheng spat as he kicked Wu Yao in his face. “I won’t spoil you anymore. If you still can’t prove yourself, I’ll just raise you like a useless pet!”

After saying his piece, Wu Wensheng turned around and headed upstairs.

Deep in the night.

Qin Yu sat in the common working space, staring at the ceiling above him in a daze. His mind was filled with the words that Uncle Tong spoke and the scene of his death.

There was a flame burning inside his heart. Clenching his fists tightly, he grabbed his phone and sent a message to Qi Lin.

Meanwhile.

After Wu Yao had his injuries cleaned and bandaged in a hospital, he was just about to send his men to Uncle Tong’s house when his phone suddenly rang.

“Hello?”

“Dajun is your brother, right? He owes me some money, but it doesn’t seem like he’s able to repay us anytime soon… Are you going to interfere with this? If not, I’ll be settling this matter my way,” Brother Xiao’s voice sounded.

Wu Yao was confused for a moment after hearing those words before it finally registered in his mind what was going on. “What did you say? You’re trying to get money out of me?”

“Dajun said that you’ll cover him,” Brother Xiao replied.

“Heh. Very well, very well! I’ll cover him! Where are you? I’ll send money over right now!”

“I’m at Songjiang’s rubbish dump.”

After saying those words, Brother Xiao hung up the phone.
