Blood splattered as a head flew into the sky followed by a bloodcurdling scream!

“Aaaaaah!”

****

Well, I can comfortably say that today is both the best day ever and not the best day ever.

Let’s just get this out of the way real quick. The scream had nothing to do with anything, not a damn thing.

To begin with, the scream came from Mina, and because of this shitshow, I missed her reaction to reading about the death of Nina and her dog by that scum of a father of hers in FMA. Pebbles was pissed, and I was pissed and if it isn't clear by now, Mina was pissed. We’re all just pissing away today and we ain’t got no diapers.

What is this shitshow you ask?

Well, a few feet in front of everyone, and by everyone I mean my group and the peanut gallery over yonder, was a head, an actual head.

Now, the head isn’t mine; it was that of a person draped in black to the point where even the head was wrapped in the very same.

This felt oddly familiar, both in the execution of this scene and the person’s spiritual fluctuation.

I looked at Wei Yun, and from her expression, I knew I was right. This was the same fellow that tried to kill me via assassination in the Spiritual Bingqi Realm back then.

Man, he has seen better days I’m sure.

“T-That’s an assassin from An Shalu Sanctorum!”

Well, if it isn’t my old friend.

“Thanks for the reminder miscellaneous expert.”

He smiled when he saw I remembered him. I don’t care what anyone says, after the MC in a cultivation novel, it’s this guy who has the strongest plot armour.

Bro will be there with you a couple thousand of chapters in, spouting exposition like he’s the narrator in One Piece.

“I-It is!”

Ah, yes the peanut gallery has become active once more, terrific. Y’kno, if used correctly, these guys do build hype.

Unfortunately for them, I have the ultimate hype man in Pebbles.

“Then how was he able to dodge that blow!?”

“No one can escape an assassination attempt from assassins from An Shalu Sanctorum! This can’t be one of them!”

“Who else could have been unable to hide under the gazes of so many experts!?”

“The Gatekeeper did warn him. Maybe that’s why he was able to react as quickly as he did?”

Lord knows these people were like theorists on crack as they got to work immediately on speculating why I survived that attack just now.

Not only that, I caught their not-so-subtle act of taking a few steps away from me as if I was the plague.

“Long Di!”

“B-Brother Long Di!”

“The hell was that!?”

Shen Ling, Violet Flame Noble, and Pebbles in that order followed by the rest of them clamoured all over me when they saw what happened.

Which I can’t blame them for, because I almost died.

“Are you okay?” Shai Bing came over with a grave expression.

“More or less. If I had a nickel for every time this happened, I would have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice, right?”

“This is troublesome,” she said after a moment.

“True,” Violet Flame Noble concurred.

“Tell me about it, brother was there back in the Spiritual Bingqi Realm trying to kill me like I tickled his ballsac—”

“Those assassins are hateful!”

“What now?” Violet Flame Noble looked at the corpse with way too many emotions.

“Did they kill someone close to you?” I asked him. It seemed as if he had a personal enmity with them.

He then went on to explain, “They killed my mother’s, friend’s, daughter’s, fiance’s cousin-in-law!”

“Yeah, I think I have a closer relationship with you than with whoever you’re talking about.” I wasn’t gonna try to decipher who the hell that was. Forget about family tree, I don't even think that person’s in the same family forest anymore.

“Violet Flame Noble, you need to stop thinking about that. It was a long time ago,” Shai Bing commented.

This was brought up more than once? Goodness, man.

“It still hurts!” Firecracker apparently had layers. They weren’t mentally sound, mind you, but layers all the same.

“Long Di,” Shai Bing left Firecracker to his own devices and turned her attention to me. “You need to understand that if the assassins of An Shalu Sanctorum are after you, then it means someone commissioned them to kill you, and it’s not cheap. Do you know who would harbour such a deep enmity?”

Mina wasn’t gonna let this opportunity slide and inserted her own two cents on that possible answer.

“It’d be easier for you to write a list of people who DON’T have enmity with Long Di. I mean, if we’re being honest, I’m not all the way off that list myself.”

Pebbles scoffed. “How the hell could you make the list? Did you not hear the prerequisite to hiring these assassins? You need money! You don’t have those! You’re like an out-of-job defunct sugar baby without the sugar!”

“The hell does that even mean!?”

“No money!”

“Screw you!”

“Which instantly makes me a better sugar baby than you!”

“Aaah!”

As much as it fills me with joy to see Mina arguing with Pebbles at the expense of her happiness and mental stability, I had to get this back on track.

Well, not exactly. I would allow this to continue, but only in the background. It pains me to know though that I won’t be able to join Pebbles in making the world a better place since I have to deal with other things.

On that note…

I replied to Shai Bing’s question with a shake of the head. “I don’t know of anyone who would be willing to fork out the cash to put out a hit on me.”

“You haven’t offended anyone?”

So I went silent right there. Now I don’t wanna be that guy, but I don’t think I’m the most likeable person.

In any case, considering this first started in the middle of the Spiritual Bingqi Realm Saga, if there was anyone who would be doing this, it’d have to be someone from the Demon Region. I mean, there’s certainly more AFTER the Demon Region debacle, but we’ll deal with that later.

“Alright, to be honest, I’ve offended a lot of people.”

“I don’t think you understand exactly,” Shai Bing replied. “It’s not your run-of-the-mill sect that can commission assassins from An Shalu Sanctorum. Even for top regular sects, they can only just afford the payment. In fact, for a normal regular sect to afford them, the price would likely bankrupt them into oblivion. So, unless a sect is willing to disband itself to hire them to kill you, this wouldn’t come from a normal sect. It’d be cheaper if they tried to kill you themselves. Even for us, the price is quite painful. For someone to commission them to take you, a Martial Master, out, it has to be coming from somewhere influential and not lacking in resources. Honestly, I don’t see that happening unless you’re…”

Suddenly, Shai Bing’s eyes widened as she stared at me, followed shortly by Violet Flame Noble who did the same.

Did I have something in my teeth?

“Y-You–”

“Nothing else on this matter,” surprisingly, the one who came to the rescue and stopped Heavenly Sun Noble from prying anymore was Qin Ling. I didn’t see that coming.

“We need to leave now!” Qin Ling was uncharacteristically animated this time around.

“Long Di…”

Shen Ling’s face was coloured with concern, and the same went for Xiannu Liang. Even Mina and Pebbles stopped their squabble, as they could tell that something was very wrong.

The peanut gallery was very quiet all of a sudden and I couldn’t see a reason as to why. But I wasn’t the guy to question things when I’m told to move and/or escape but I wasn’t gonna question it.

Boom!

Her ice carriage roared over, forcing the crowd hastily to part ways. They wore angry expressions as they ducked and dived.

However, they didn’t dare to say anything about it.

As soon as it arrived, the doors swung open and a mist of frost wafted out.

Qin Ling then confronted the group. “For everyone who wishes to follow along with us with the knowledge of what you think you know. Get in.”
