Chapter 3844: Assassination
A few hours later, Bai Zhi arrived at the orphanage gates.
What was left of it, anyway, since the six-story building had been reduced to a pile of rubble. The area had been cordoned off with police tape, and several official-looking people were busily working amongst the debris.
According to official estimates, there had been about six casualties as a result of the collapse, and it would take three to five days to clear the rubble completely. There was continuing speculation about whether they would find more bodies, as well as discussion about the building's state of disrepair, which had led to the collapse.
It was all rather standard.
After a moment's thought, Bai Zhi walked straight up to the site. In many ways, the orphanage was his home, and its director the only family he had in the world. There was no way he could sit on the sidelines twiddling his thumbs in response to such a disaster.
For safety reasons, unauthorized personnel were not allowed near the pile of rubble, and even after Bai Zhi tried to explain how he was related to the place and people there, he was eventually turned away by the police.
Realizing with some disappointment that he wasn't likely to make further headway by hanging around, Bai Zhi decided to visit the campus belle and her friend at the hospital instead—perhaps he would learn something from their account of recent events. Just as he was leaving, his path was blocked by an unexpected arrival.
"...Nightwatch?"
Bai Zhi raised a curious eyebrow at the dashing, twenty-something year old man sitting across from him, who wore a thick scarf that obscured his neck and mouth, despite the blazing-hot sun outside.
"Yes. The Nightwatch's mission is to protect the world of light while staying hidden in the shadows. You should have heard of us from Old Xu."
The man placed some photographs on the table and slid them over to Bai Zhi with a smile.
"You've done well staying hidden thus far, but we finally found you when you surfaced to save those people. I assure you, we come in peace."
