Special District 9 Chapter 52: On the Way

Once they were out of Special District 9, Old Cat immediately sensed that the temperature outside had plummeted once more. As he was seated on the cargo bed of the vehicle, exposed to the chilly weather, he had four military coats on him. He pried open the woolen curtains that were intended to shield him from the wind and glanced outward. “Isn’t this at least -40 degrees out here?”

“Somewhere there, I guess,” Qin Yu replied. He would also rub his palms together from time to time to generate some heat. “Don’t just keep sitting there. If you have nothing to do, you should move around a bit to warm your body.”

“Did you ride a vehicle when you were entering Special District 9 too?” Old Cat asked.

“For the first part of the journey, yeah. The rest was on foot.”

“… You are a freaking warrior.” Old Cat was speechless.

The vehicle treaded through the snowy path for around five hours before finally entering a small military replenishment stop. The two of them got down and paid the money before driving a petrol jeep, which looked as if it was going to break down soon, and continued on their way. The climate here was simply too cold for electronic or hybrid vehicles to operate properly for long distances.

The petrol jeep was something that Superintendent Li had specially arranged for them through his connections. Even though the petrol jeep looked rickety, it was obvious that he didn’t scrimp on it at all. The heater and other amenities were all in working condition, and the off-road capability of the jeep to navigate through difficult terrains remained unhindered.

En route, Old Cat kept looking all around the silver-cloaked land like a curious baby. He pointed at the huge metal structures several kilometers away and asked, “ What’s that?”

“They are signaling towers,” Qin Yu replied. “There are metal fences beneath the towers in case they aren’t too visible in the night.”

“What are they signaling for?”
