Special District 9 Chapter 29: Deadly Double Tackle

After pulling the pin out, Shrimp didn’t throw the grenade right away. Humans were born with a pair of eyes and legs; as soon as he showed any intention of throwing the grenade, those policemen would immediately scatter. And after the impact of the explosion subsided, those bunch of scoundrels would collapse in on them once more. The effect wouldn’t be too great.

So, he could only continue grabbing the grenade in his hand and dash right into the most concentrated cluster of policemen as if a madman.

This sudden rush caught those policemen off guard. No one knew whether Shrimp was holding onto the pin or was pushing the lever down with his hands. So, they could only back away in a fluster.

“Scatter!”

“He has a grenade in his hand!”

“…!”

The policemen quickly scattered and opened up a path. Meanwhile, Shrimp roared furiously, “Charge a way out!”

Bang! Bang!

Suu Ang raised his gun and shot four bullets at Shrimp. However, the latter was running too quickly, and he was wearing a bulletproof vest too. The bullets that struck his chest only left a stream of white smoke on him.

“He’s armored!” Suu Ang shouted as he saw Shrimp still running even after being shot four times.

“Bro, hurry up and run!” Shrimp shouted as he raised his right hand, and a ticking sound immediately sounded from it.

“He’s pulled it! He’s pulled the grenade!” Suu Ang bellowed as he turned around and fled.

By this moment, Ah Long and the others had also pulled out their guns too. They dashed out of the hole in the encirclement created by the panic surrounding Shrimp as they shot the policemen around them.

On the other hand, seeing how Shrimp’s actions had caused an opening in their encirclement, Qin Yu unhesitatingly dashed toward Shrimp with his thick bomb suit, tackling the latter by his waist.

Gudong!

The two of them fell to the ground, and Qin Yu instinctively held Shrimp’s head down with his massive hands.

Boom!

A deafening explosion broke the silence of the night. A blasted arm flew into the sky, and the glass exterior of the bomb suit was immediately dyed crimson with blood.

“Squad leader, squad leader!” Zhu Wei cried out in shock.

“Don’t panic, follow the plan!” Qin Yu shook his head as he messily wiped away the bloodied mess on his face protector. He glanced down to look at Shrimp, only to see that the latter had half of his right arm blasted away. White bones with bits of meat eerily attached to it could be seen as crimson blood flowed down his body.

“Fucker!”

Seeing that Shrimp was down, Ah Long immediately began shooting at Qin Yu furiously.

Pu ling!

Qin Yu rose to his feet before he began dashing toward where Ah Long was.

Bang bang bang!

A stream of bullets landed on Qin Yu’s head, his legs, and other vitals, causing sparks to appear. However, none of them was able to get through the bomb suit at all.

Seeing that it was impossible for him to breach Qin Yu’s defense with his firepower, Ah Long retreated in a fluster as he hurriedly switched magazines.

Peng!

Qin Yu leaped forward once more, and using the advantage he had from his heavy weight, he crashed right into Ah Long’s chin.

Hua peng!

Ah Long was forced to retreat two steps.

Then, Qin Yu abruptly lowered his stance and grabbed Ah Long’s legs tightly. With a powerful upward movement, Ah Long was sent flying through the air before crashing heavily onto the ground.

“Don’t move!”

Qin Yu’s movements were extremely simple, and his charges were no more than 50 meters long, but he was wearing extremely heavy weights to brawl with others. This was extremely demanding on his burst power. As such, he was already on the brink of running out of strength. He felt like someone had injected his legs with lead. He could only continue pressing down on Ah Long with the weight of his body as he howled in exhaustion.

With the threat of the grenade resolved, the other policemen also didn’t have any hesitations anymore. The forty or so policemen, equipped with riot shields, swiftly curbed the remaining members of the gang. In less than ten seconds, the battle was concluded.

“Hold him down! Hold him down!” Zhu Wei pointed to Ah Long on the ground and shouted.

Eight policemen came up, and without bothering to even use handcuffs, they placed Ah Long in a 35 kilogram heavy shackles.

Qin Yu lay in the snow quietly for around a minute to rest before he finally took off the heavy metal helmet on his head. He turned to the side and vomited bloody sputum before cursing, “Goddamnit. I’m lucky I had the bomb suit on, or else even the toughest bulletproof vest wouldn’t save me just now.”

“Are you fine?” Suu Ang rushed over and asked.

“I’m fine. My tackle was still in position, so the grenade exploded a little ahead of me,” Qin Yu replied as he wiped off the sweat on his face. He intentionally turned to Suu Ang and the others and said, “Hell, Platoon Commander Yuan should have seen how I have put life on the line in order to produce results for him. If he still doesn’t get me promoted after this, I don’t think that there’s no one in the platoon who’ll be able to accept that.”

“Yes, of course!” Suu Ang nodded in agreement. He put a thumbs up as he said, “If not for your earlier double tackle, who knows how the operation would have gone?”

“We’ll have a drink later on and calm our nerves!” Qin Yu said as he clumsily pushed himself off the ground. “Let’s bring him back to the bureau.”

Eleven-thirty at night.

Standing by the side of the corridor, Qin Yu was talking on the phone, “Zhu Wei, get the doctor to do whatever that is necessary to cure that grenade fellow. Yes, the more people there is, the easier it is to extract leads… Un, I was just about to eat. The interrogation will be starting soon. Yes, that’s all then.”

A series of footsteps sounded by the corridor and Qi Lin walked over with a metal lunchbox in hand. He asked with a smile, “Aiyo, you’re back?”

Qin Yu turned around and asked, “You’re here to eat?”

“Un. There isn’t anything to do, so I came here to get some food,” Qi Lin replied casually. “How is it on your side? Was the operation successful?”

“Yeah, we got them all.”

“Are our brothers fine?”

“We caught them by surprise. Before they could even react, we have already taken them down. So, none of our brothers were injured in the operation.”

“That’s a relief,” Qi Lin replied with a grin. He continued asking, “Eh, I thought that you were going to cooperate with the military on this operation? Why didn’t I see anyone from the military around here?”

Qin Yu was slightly taken aback. “Who did you hear that from?”

“Is that not it? I heard that from some idle chatter back in the dormitory,” Qi Lin replied.

“That’s bullshit. Why would we cooperate with the military for our operations?” As the operation was already over, there was no need for Qin Yu to hide the details anymore. So, he replied frankly, “Our target this time around are the medicine smugglers, you know, the person who killed four of our brothers the last time around, Ah Long.”

Dang lang!

A metallic sound echoed as the metal lunchbox in Qi Lin’s hands fell to the ground. His body stiffened on the spot as his face swiftly turned pale.

“What’s wrong?” Qin Yu asked with a frown.

However, Qi Lin was already in a completely dazed state. All he could hear was a ringing in his ear.

Qin Yu patted Qi Lin’s shoulder and asked, “Hey, what’s wrong?”

Qi Lin quickly came back to his senses as he looked at Qin Yu with a hint of anxiety in his eyes, “I-It’s that… Ah Long?”

“Yeah. Platoon Commander Yuan got a lead on him, so we went to capture him,” Qin Yu nodded in response. “Are you fine? You don’t look too well.”

“Y-yes, I’m fine. I just suddenly thought of Jabi… Didn’t Jabi die in his hands?” Qi Lin asked with a slightly forced smile. “I’m still a bit shaken by the incident that day.”

“Are you sure you’re fine?”

“Yeah, I’m fine,” Qi Lin replied as he bent down to pick up his lunchbox. “You should go ahead and have your dinner.”

“You aren’t eating? Let’s go together.”

“I didn’t bring my chili paste. I’m going back to get it,” Qi Lin replied with a smile.

“Ah. I’ll be going ahead then.”

“Un!” Qi Lin nodded before leaving with his lunchbox.

In the corridor, Qin Yu looked at Qi Lin’s departing back with a bizarre look on his face. He didn’t believe what Qi Lin had said earlier at all, but at the same time, he didn’t understand why the other party was acting so unnaturally either.

“Squad leader, you’re eating?” Guan Qi suddenly called out by the entrance of the canteen.

“Coming!” Tossing his doubts to the back of his mind, Qin Yu walked over to the canteen.

Two minutes later, in the storage room of the Logistics Department.

After shutting the door, Qi Lin slumped onto the ground as he tousled his hair in exasperation, roaring, “Damn it! Isn’t it an operation with the military? Hasn’t it already been half a month? Why is he still here? … Why did it all end up like that…!”

Hand grenades have both a lever and a pin. The pin is stuck into the hand grenade in a manner that keeps the lever down, so if you take out the pin, the lever would shoot up, and the hand grenade will begin its countdown to detonation. However, it’s possible to hold down the lever manually with your hands after the pin is pulled so as to delay the grenade’s detonation.

The difference between the two in a confrontation is that if you shoot a person right away before the grenade pin is pulled, the grenade is pretty useless. However, if you shoot a person who has already pulled the pin and is pushing down on the lever manually, if he dies, his hand releases its grip on the lever, and everything in the area is blown to bits.
