Special District 9 Chapter 174: Gunshots

A car slowly came to a halt beside a two-storey building located opposite to Songjiang’s North Station. Wu Wensheng walked out of the car and instructed, “You don’t need to come in. Just wait in the car.”

“Alright,” Wu Wensheng’s nephew replied.

Wu Wensheng tidied up his suit before he headed up the stairs to the second floor. He pushed the door open and walked into the room.

Seven minutes later, inside the room on the second floor.

A bald middle-aged man wearing pajamas blew his nose before asking, “Tea?”

“I’ll pass. I’ll be leaving after saying my piece,” Wu Wensheng said as he settled down on the sofa. He raised his head to look at the middle-aged man and asked, “You aren’t feeling well?”

“It’s pneumonia. My fever just receded,” the middle-aged man replied as he coughed a little. He took a seat opposite to Wu Wensheng before asking, “Is the funeral over?”

“Yeah, it’s settled.” Wu Wensheng took out a cigarette box as he asked with a slight frown. “Why are you staying in Black Street Sector these days?”

“It would be a waste to leave this flat empty after buying it. Besides, there’s too many issues at home these days, so it’s becoming cumbersome to return. I’m thinking of just resting here for the time being,” the middle-aged man replied.

Wu Wensheng took a sharp puff of smoke before replying deeply, “Old Yan, how much stock do we have left in the storage room?”

“Not much,” the middle-aged man replied after thinking for a moment. “We can probably put together five of them.”

“Contact the regulars. Try to sell them off as soon as possible,” Wu Wensheng instructed.

Old Yan frowned upon hearing those words. “Are you really intending on dabbling in the medicine market together with Yuan Ke?”

“That’s not entirely it,” Wu Wensheng replied with a deep sigh. “Little Wu’s death has complicated some matters. We’ve been waking too close with Yuan Ke recently, which struck the nerves of some people in the Police Bureau. We need to lie low for the time being.”

“Ha!” Old Yan sighed deeply. He remarked grudgingly, “I told you that it wasn’t a good idea to let Little Wu take over the gun business, but you insisted that it was fine with me guiding him along. But in just one year, he’s already decided to turn a deaf ear to everyone else!

“In my view, this incident can be completely attributed to poor management. His subordinate, Dajun, liaised with fixers outside on his own accord and used the company’s channel to distribute those goods. He’s trying to use the company’s resources for his own personal gains; this is an unacceptable behavior that needs to be harshly punished! Yet, Little Wu chose to stand up for him instead, which resulted in the current situation. Ahh, what a huge regret!”

Wu Wensheng looked at Old Yan quietly for a long while before finally agreeing softly, “You’re right. I doted on Little Wu too much.”

“I know that I shouldn’t ramble about all these before you when you have just lost your son,” Old Yan coughed a little before continuing on. “However, I think that this is a systemic issue. It isn’t just Little Wu, but all of us are getting a little over our heads… If we act too arrogantly in times of prosperity, we won’t know how many enemies will stab us in the back when the chips are down.”

“I get what you mean,” Wu Wensheng replied.

Old Yan’s eyes flickered contemplatively for a while before he sighed helplessly and continued, “It’s not too bad dabbling in medicine either. We’ve been playing too dominantly in the field. There are a lot of friends on top telling me that many of the official channels aren’t earning as much as us… In the past two years, the only ones who really profited in the Jiangnan Sector are us.”

“You’re right,” Wu Wensheng said as he took another puff of smoke. “Once we nab those fixers, I’ll have a talk with Yuan Ke. Meanwhile, you should reorganize your company and prepare for the changes ahead.”

“Alright.”

“Rest up well. I’ll be leaving,” Wu Wensheng put out his cigarette before rising to his feet.

“I’ll walk you out.”

“Nah, there’s no need for that. It’s cold outside. Just stay in here.” Wu Wensheng waved his hand before heading to the door.

Old Yan stood by the sofa for a while before suddenly asking, “The Legislative Council’s Sancho is having his birthday this month. How much do you think we should send over?”

Wu Wensheng was stunned. “He informed you personally?”

“Yeah,” Old Yan replied.

“Make it 200,000 then,” Wu Wensheng contemplated for a moment before replying. “The commercial street that I proposed for Jiangnan Sector previously is jammed up on his side. Since he informed you about his birthday personally, he probably just wants to get something good out of it.”

“Alright, I’ll settle it.”

“Make sure to jot it down clearly in the accounting records,” Wu Wensheng instructed.

“Got it.”

“Alright, I’ll be leaving then,” Wu Wensheng said before heading down the stairs.

Fifteen minutes later, on the road.

Wu Wensheng sat in the car with his right hand propping up his chin. He was deep in thoughts.

On the driver seat, his nephew took a few glances at him through the rearview mirror before asking, “Uncle, why do you look a little down?”

“Haa.” Wu Wensheng sighed deeply. “Old Yan has some views on the company.”

His nephew glanced at him through the rearview mirror inquisitively.

“Little Wu has been going overboard with some stuff over the years, and my attention has been focused on solidifying my position in the political field, so we ended up neglecting Old Yan’s feelings,” Wu Wensheng remarked keenly. “I feel that… in less than a year, Old Yan will be backing out of our partnership to go solo.”

“Does he dare?” his nephew immediately refuted with a deep frown. “Would he have been able to climb up to his current position as ‘Millionaire Yan’ without our help? Now he wants to back out as soon as the company is facing some trouble. Now, Isn’t that convenient!”

Wu Wensheng looked at his nephew with a hint of disappointment in his eyes after hearing those words, but he didn’t say a word.

On the second floor of the flat.

Old Yan returned to his bedroom and dialed a number.

“Hello, Brother Yan?”

“Call the fixers outside. Tell them that I have a batch of goods that will be going out urgently,” Old Yan instructed impassively. “The price will be 30% lower than usual. If they’re interested, they should come into the city over the next two days to collect the goods.”

“Got it.”

“Also, send me 200,000 from the bank account. I’ll need it soon.”

“How should I record it down?”

“… Write part of it off as a fake transaction, and the other part as acquisition of capital,” Old Yan replied.

“Got it.”

“Alright, that’s all for now.” Old Yan hung up the phone.

He took off his pajamas and headed for the toilet. He was intending to wash up quickly and have an afternoon nap.

Downstairs, on the first floor.

The driver serving Old Yan was currently seated on a sofa, fully engaged in watching the live broadcast of a female streamer

Bam!

The door suddenly opened at this moment, and a man wearing a darkened Sun Wukong’s mask walked in together with four of his companions.

The driver raised his head and stared at them in alarm, “You all…”

The masked man raised his gun, which was attached with a silencer, and aimed it at the driver’s head.

“W-w… What are you all…?”

Pu pu pu!

But before the driver could finish his words, the masked man had already fired his gun.

Blood spurted all over the room. The driver fell back onto the sofa with widened eyes.

In the toilet on the second floor, Old Yan heard some noises below, but he wasn’t able to make out what exactly it was. So, he shouted, “Hey, what the hell are you messing with below…?”

Meanwhile, the masked man headed toward the stairs briskly with a wave of his hand. “The second floor.”

Several minutes later…

Old Yan howled in agitation, “What are you all doing? Are you all here for money? There’s money in the drawer, 20,000! Let’s talk things out calmly….”

Bang bang!

Another two more gunshots sounded, but they weren’t silenced this time around.
