Chapter 673: When the Rain Continues
Inside the Police Bureau.
Qin Yu would have never thought that the responsibilities that came with picking up a child didn’t stop with just giving him a roof and food. He still had to fight a criminal case for the child too! What was even more frustrating was that the incident happened within the jurisdiction of Platoon 4, which meant the one to take over the case was Liu Baochen’s platoon.
It would be nothing much if it was just that. After all, there were many such cases in Songjiang, and they were dealt with in two ways. The usual way would be to further investigate the matter, and the exception to that would be if the person in question had an insider in the Police Bureau.
In a stroke of misfortune, Hua-jie was a particularly cunning individual. As soon as she was caught, the first thing she did was to talk about Qin Yu, saying that Bucktooth was his younger brother, hoping to borrow Qin Yu’s name to settle the matter. But of all police officers she could have stumbled onto, the one she spoke to happened to be none other than Liu Baochen.
When Liu Baochen found out that the group arrested were related with Qin Yu, he unhesitatingly tossed them into the interrogation room.
…
On the first floor of the Police Bureau.
Zhu Wei looked at Qin Yu with a bizarre look in his eyes as he asked in a roundabout manner, “Are you really in that kind of relation with Hua-jie?”
“What do you mean by that kind of relation?”
“You know, that kind of relation.”
“Stop talking nonsense, look at how old she is! Do you think that my sense of beauty swerves that way?” Qin Yu replied in frustration. “She’s my neighbor. Her store is right beside Residence 88.”
“So the two of you aren’t related! Then why the heck did she raise your name?” Zhu Wei was speechless. “It should have been nothing much at all. I already gave a heads up to the brother in charge of the case, and it could have been settled with just some compensation. But as soon as she raised your name, that dog, Liu Baochen, looked as if someone had injected him with steroids. He immediately rushed back to vet the case even though it was already after working hours.”
“She doesn’t know the situation in the Police Bureau, so she must have thought that she could settle the matter just by raising my name,” Qin Yu replied vexedly. “But it only further complicated the situation.”
“Yeah…” Zhu Wei nodded with a sigh. “That Liu Baochen has been looking for ways to do us in, and she walks right in and hands him what he needs.”
Qin Yu took out his e-cigarette and took a puff before asking, “Where are they?”
“Where else other than the interrogation room?” Zhu Wei replied. “The other police officers would have at least sold us a face and let us give some ‘advice’ to them. But now that Liu Baochen is involved in this too, I have no way of meeting Bucktooth and the others anymore.”
“Sigh!” Qin Yu shook his head. He asked Zhu Wei softly, “Or should I try looking for Old Wen and ask him to go easy on us for this matter?”
“Wen Yonggang just arrived at our Police Bureau, and it’s obvious that he was sent here to curb Old Li. Do you think that it’s even possible for him to give us this face?” Zhu Wei replied. “Based on what I heard, it seems like it was Yuan Hua who pulled some strings to have him transferred over to the Police Headquarters back then. That means that he’s on the same side as the Yuan Family!”
Qin Yu pondered for a moment before saying with a frown, “But as a vice superintendent, does he really need to harp on such minor matters? There isn’t much point in doing this; it’d just make him seem narrow-minded and childish.”
“It’s hard to say,” Zhu Wei shook his head and replied. “But again, you have no choice but to look for him to deal with this issue. I doubt that it’ll do you much good if you look for Liu Baochen instead; you nearly came to blows with him earlier in the day!”
“So should I just give Wen Yonggang a try? I’ll just say some conceding words to him.”
“Or else, why don’t you look for Old Li instead?” Zhu Wei threw out the final resort.
Qin Yu immediately rejected the notion, saying, “You should drop that idea. We’re not babies who can’t care for ourselves. Think of how inept we’d look if we have to depend on Old Li for the smallest of stuff!”
“Heh, there’s no other choice then.”
“Shit, I really don’t know what to say,” Qin Yu berated in frustration. “I just returned for barely a day, and that rascal is already bringing me trouble. Now I’ve to go beg with the person that I want nothing to do with.”
“It’s your son, what else can you do?”
“Scram!” Qin Yu berated as he began heading upstairs.
…
Wen Yonggang had just been transferred back, so he had quite a bit of work to deal with. As such, he still hadn’t got off work yet even though it was already getting late.
Qin Yu glanced through at the working area and saw that the lights of Wen Yonggang’s office were still on. He hesitated for a long while before finally walking over and knocking on the door.
A short moment later, a voice sounded from within, “Come in!”
Qin Yu took a deep breath before walking in with a bright smile on his face, “Vice Superintendent Wen, are you busy?”
“Ah yes, Qin Yu.” Wen Yonggang habitually flung his fringe to the side, which was made up of two layers of hair extension, and nodded at him, saying, “Come in.”
“You’re still at work even though it’s already so late. You’re really a role model that we should strive to follow,” Qin Yu offered a compliment that disgusted even himself.
Wen Yonggang took a sip of water with poise before asking with a smile, “I heard that you were still having your break. What brings you here at such a late hour?”
“Aiyo, don’t even talk about it!” Qin Yu sighed deeply as a helpless look surfaced on his face. “A child I adopted not long ago got a little hot-headed and hacked another person on the street. Sigh, I can’t just turn a blind eye to this matter, so I came here hoping that you can help me give a heads up to Platoon Commander Liu. I know that he’s done wrong, so it goes without saying that we should compensate the other person duly. However, that child is still young, so it wouldn’t do for him to have him put away just like that. After all, our Songjiang doesn’t have a youth detention center or something of that sort. If you put such a young child to prison, his future would be ruined.”
“Ah, is the child you’re referring to the one who was arrested with a couple of women?” Wen Yonggang asked.
“Yes, that’s him,” Qin Yu replied with a nod.
Wen Yonggang flung his fringe once more as his expression suddenly hardened up. He said, “Qin Yu, speaking of this matter, I really need to say a few words to you.”
“Yes, please go ahead.”
“Since that child is related to you, you should try to steer clear of the case under the principles of conflict of interest. It isn’t right for you to approach me and attempt to pull a back door. Such action reflects badly both on you and the Police Bureau,” Wen Yonggang told Qin Yu sternly. “Also, does the child you have adopted have residential rights in Special District 9? Did he obtain it through proper social welfare channels?”
Those words made it very clear to Qin Yu just what Wen Yonggang’s stance was. It was likely that Liu Baochen had shared the details of the case with Wen Yonggang, or else the latter wouldn’t have had so many questions regarding this matter.
“Qin Yu, we are law enforcers, the scales of justice in Songjiang!” Wen Yonggang continued his lecturing. “If you try to pull connections for everything you do, you won’t be able to progress far as a police officer!”
“Vice Superintendent Wen, I have looked into this matter too.” Qin Yu clenched his fists by his side, and the smile had also vanished from his face. “The reason why Bucktooth hacked Old Zhang with a chopper is due to the latter exerting violence on everyone within the store for ten whole minutes. There’s a higher possibility for juveniles to commit extreme actions after witnessing a shocking sight, and that is covered within the law.”
“If it’s covered within the law, why did you come and look for me then?” Wen Yonggang placed his hands in his pockets as he asked. “What are you afraid of?”
Qin Yu stared at Wen Yonggang intently before replying expressionlessly, “I was worried that Liu Baochen would try to maneuver the case in a way disadvantageous to Bucktooth due to his relationship with me.”
“Nonsense!” Wen Yonggang slammed his fist on the table. “I am well aware of what kind of person Liu Baochen is. He’s not the type to allow personal interests to get in the way of his work!”
…
In the interrogation room.
Holding a teacup, Liu Baochen glared at Hua-jie with cold eyes as he said, “Don’t shove that useless nonsense to me. I’m not asking you about the details of the case. Why are you providing for Wang Henan in your store? Is it because your store has intimate relations with Police Officer Qin Yu? Has Qin Yu showed exceptional care toward your store, or perhaps, do you have some monetary agreement with him? …!”
