Chapter 673: When the Rain Continues
Returning back to Songjiang, Qin Yu first passed Old Ma’s ashes back to his family members before discreetly heading back to the Police Bureau.
In the office.
Superintendent Li sat on his chair as he smoked with a grave look on his face, not saying a word at all.
Qin Yu waited for a moment before asking softly, “Uncle Li, did something occur during the reshuffling of manpower?”
“Those bastards in the Police Headquarters are really getting too much!” Superintendent Li howled in exasperation. “After Yuan Ke left, before I could start planning for manpower changes within the Police Bureau, those bastards suddenly sent a vice superintendent in here to fucking take over half of the criminal cases in the Black Street Sector. They are obviously trying to keep me in check!”
Qin Yu sighed helplessly.
“I was intending to use the fake medicine incident to promote you into the commander of Platoon 4, but just as the Police Headquarters was going to approve the documents, the case was suddenly pushed down,” Superintendent Li said in vexation.
“I looked into it, and it turns out that its that fucking Wen Yonggang who did it, claiming that your qualification is lacking and that you haven’t accrued enough merit yet!”
“Is Yong Wengang the new vice superintendent installed by the Police Headquarters?” Qin Yu asked.
“That’s right.” Superintendent Li nodded. “That fellow will be a tough nut to crack. He used to work in the Black Street Sector Police Bureau as a platoon commander before moving over to the Police Headquarters to work in the Human Resource Department. This means that he has quite some connections to influence manpower movements within the Police Force. After building up his portfolio in the Police Headquarters, he came back with the title of a vice superintendent.”
“Is he on close terms with the Yuan Family?” Qin Yu asked.
“Of course. Why else would he shoot down your promotion approval request?” Superintendent Li replied. “You have played quite an important role in the deaths of Xing Zihao and Yuan Hua. While the other side won’t dare to go overboard out of fear of the implications from the fake medicine incident, there’s no doubt that they will think of ways to deal with you.”
“I can imagine that.” Qin Yu nodded in agreement.
“Wen Yonggang will be managing Platoon 4, 5, and 6,” Superintendent Li said. “I was intending to move you over to Platoon 1 or Platoon 3 since I’m directly managing those two, and it’ll be easier for us to move that way. However, when I raised that matter with him, he claimed that he needs to first understand the current situation in the platoons first, so he didn’t respond to me right away. It wouldn’t do for me to keep harping on that issue, so you might have to stay in Platoon 4 for the time being.”
“So, I’ll be under his jurisdiction for the time being?” Qin Yu asked, slightly irked by the notion.
“It can’t be helped. He just arrived here, and I can’t beg him or have a fallout with him over something as minor as this just yet,” Superintendent Li said with a frustrated voice. “I managed to secure your position as a vice platoon commander, but you can be certain that Wen Yonggang will assign an experienced platoon commander as your superior to curb you. For the time being, you should tuck your tail between your legs and keep a low profile. I’ll find an opportunity to move you and your men back to Platoon 1.”
Qin Yu couldn’t help but feel a little irritated upon hearing those words, but this emotion wasn’t directed at Superintendent Li. He knew that Superintendent Li had his hands tied on some matters, and he had already done a lot to help him thus far. What that really grated on his nerves was Wen Yonggang.
Qin Yu was initially not in a hurry to get promoted, but seeing his position getting forcefully taken away by another was still incredibly frustrating for him.
After all, who wouldn’t want to rise through the ranks and earn big bucks?! Putting aside the fact that he didn’t manage to become a platoon commander, he was even stuck in the same pot of shit as Wen Yonggang for the foreseeable future. It was inevitable that he would feel a little stifled inside.
“It’s going to be a new year soon. I promise you that I’ll move you back to Platoon 1 before the end of the year,” Superintendent Li could tell that Qin Yu wasn’t feeling too good inside, so he consoled him. “Heh. You’re feeling indignant because you didn’t manage to become a platoon commander, but you should take a look at me. Every single damned day, I sit here with enemies surrounded with enemies.”
“You’re a bigwig, it goes without saying that your heart is bigger too. I’m just a narrow-minded lad. All I can think of right now is to pray with the gods to give Wen Yonggang gallstones or something,” Qin Yu replied in a huff.
“You rascal! Hahaha!” Superintendent Li laughed in amusement.
After discussing the reshuffling of manpower within the Police Bureau, they moved on to discuss some of the details surrounding the medicine route before Qin Yu finally got up and returned back to Platoon 4’s working space.
…
Wen Yonggang had his roots in the Black Street Sector Police Bureau, so his influence didn’t pale too far in comparison to Superintendent Li. There were many veterans in the Police Bureau who were familiar with him, and this included the newly promoted commander of Platoon 4, Liu Baochen.
Inside the working space.
Qin Yu gathered the members of Squad 3 into the meeting room for a meeting. He informed Zhu Wei and the others that Guan Qi’s case was still undergoing investigation, but since Old Ma had practically taken all of the blame by himself, there was no need to worry. Guan Qi should be released within the next two to three years, but it would probably be impossible for him to return to the Police Force.
Hearing those words, the others couldn’t help but feel a little uncomfortable inside. They suggested heading to Fengbei together one of these days to visit Guan Qi.
Just as everyone wrapped up the official matters and had begun chatting idly with one another, two men suddenly walked into the room. The person walking at the forefront was a refined middle-aged man wearing black-rimmed spectacles. He walked with toe-in footsteps as he issued some instructions to the other man behind him.
“Who is it?” Qin Yu asked.
It’s the newly arrived vice superintendent, Wen Yonggang,” Zhu Wei replied.
“Ah.” Qin Yu stood up from his seat upon hearing those words.
“Are you in a meeting?” Wen Yonggang habitually flung his side-parted hairstyle as he greeted the group with a smile.
“Morning, sir.”
The group quickly rose to their feet and saluted Wen Yonggang.
After saluting him, Qin Yu stretched his hand forth and said, “Pleased to meet you, Vice Superintendent Wen. I’m Qin Yu.”
Ignoring Qin Yu’s outstretched hand, Wen Yonggang assessed Qin Yu for a moment before nodding his head slightly, saying, “Not bad. I’ll have a chat with you some other day.”
“Un,” Qin Yu nodded in response.
Wen Yonggang retracted his gaze and turned to the group behind Qin Yu, saying, “Little Liu, handle the case as I instructed you to. Crack it as soon as possible.”
“Yes, sir!”
“Alright, that’s all I have,” Wen Yonggang said before returning back to his office. He didn’t seem to have any intention of talking to Qin Yu at all.
Meanwhile, in the meeting room, the burly Liu Baochen turned to Qin Yu with a forbidding look and berated, “The meeting rooms are intended for work purposes! How are the others to work if the lot of you gather around here and chat away merrily?! Also, who allowed you to smoke here? If I catch anyone doing it again, I’ll be fining you right away, and it’ll be recorded down! On that note, you better be dressed in your uniforms while at work. If I see any of you wearing casual clothes during working hours, I’ll be deducting your monthly pay right away!”
Qin Yu shot a glance at Liu Baochen before calmly instructing the rest of the group, “Return to your positions and start work!”
The members of Squad 3 immediately scattered.
Liu Baochen turned to Qin Yu and spoke with a forceful tone, “You, come to my office.”
However, Qin Yu simply turned around and walked away, saying, “Do it tomorrow. My leave hasn’t ended yet.”
Liu Baochen was stunned for a moment before he glared at Qin Yu’s departing figure and cursed, “Still showing off, huh? You’ll have plenty to suffer for very soon.”
…
In the ‘meat store’ beside Residence 88, Bucktooth was in the midst of chatting with Xiangxiang when the man, who beat up Hua-jie, the other day suddenly walked in with drunk footsteps.
The few women inside the store immediately frowned upon seeing him.
“Hua-er… Get down here right now and give me money! I fucking lost 100 dollars again!” the man released a drunken belch as he shouted with unsteady footsteps from the entrance.
Xiangxiang hid behind the counter as she glared at the man with a mixture of fear and anger in her eyes. Unknowingly, she was already clenching her fists tightly together.
